First bass riffs you learned

I've been watching some old TV programs while recovering from the croup of the week. While watching, I was reminded that the first bass riffs I learned were from the intro songs of TV series.

Here are my first two:

Theme from "Peter Gunn"

Theme from "Mission Impossible"

These two will date me for sure, but they still sound good to me.

So, how about you. What were the first two bass riffs you learned, and where did you first hear them?

Thump on,

"Tom Sawyer" - the middle 7/8 section. Unfortunately, I learned it incorrectly and played it wrong for about 35 years.

I like both of those as well. I used to play the Peter Gunn bassline on bari sax before I ever touched a bass. When I picked up bass, I learned to play along with full songs before I learned riffs. The order was:

  • Metallica - "And Justice For All"
  • Guns N' Roses - "Think About You"
  • Metallica - "Master of Puppets"

You may wonder how I played Master so fast right off the bat. I cared more about getting the notes right than the tone, so I played with a weird technique where I was pretty much just slapping each note with fingers, like Levin's Funk Fingers almost. It was only in the next few years of playing that I started learning how to use proper technique by pulling through the strings.

it was either "Fire Woman" by The Cult or "Don't Fear the Reaper", albeit a simplified version of it, as I was trying to teach them to my friend who had just bought a bass. I didn't really play bass at the time, I was just trying to teach him something we could play together.
