Around 1970 in a music store, a custom color badly blue (Dauphin?) Fender Jazz Bass.
It was in a music store in Dallas, 1975. A Fender Jazz in natural finish, with maple fret board. It was love at first sight. Funny though, I've owned several Fenders, but none with those specs.
I was 6 or so, fought like heck. Looked like this.
It helped you learn your "scales" I'm sure!
A red 1960s Hagstrom FB solid body, very plastic, the one with one volume knob and the slider switches. It was an epiphany.
This thing that I found in a local music shop, $100 used, and asked my mom for as a Christmas gift (Wabash, Indiana, circa 1986). Short-scale, Fender-shaped headstock, some kind of walnut stain. I seem to recall the blocks being painted on. I’d actually be really curious to know what it was, but my guess it was something some Hoosier made in his barn (or made out of his barn). I treated it like the old piece of junk it appeared to be (and certainly was, by the time I ripped out the frets to get a taste of the fretless experience).
Oddly, I wish I still had it (pre-fret-ripping). It would be fun to see what I could do with it, now that I know that a set-up is a thing that exists—and one I can do myself.

A PoS like this Kay from a mail order catalogue. But I stuck with it nonetheless.
1972 red P Bass. I borrowed from a friend in 1976. She offered to sell it to me for $100. My parents refused and bought me a flute for $200. I still have the flute, but ....
That looks nice!A Japanese piece of crap in about 1967, my first bass, no name, it was one of the most exciting days of my life, seriously. It was a long scale single pickup sunburst although after that the similarity to a Fender was gone. It was something like this although I don't really remember it very well.

I don't associate 'Japanese' with crap, but I guess they too are(or; have not always been) not always on top of their game...
i don't know the brand, but it was some kind of P bass, possibly a squier. it was 1993 or possibly 1994, i was at my friend's studio D, and i was asked to play bass for a band reunion that had the bass with them but not their original bass player. after one song, i asked if i could buy the bass from them 
It was a Washburn Status bass in green - exactly like this one https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3350/3647160257_bfc72b26b0_b.jpg - that I borrowed from a friend. I was playing guitar at the time and wanted to borrow an actual bass for some 4 track work I was doing. I absolutely hated this bass. I'm sure it was fine, it just REALLY didn't suit me at all. The body felt massive and the neck was really chunky.
I so wanted to play bass that when I was 13 I got a cheapo classical guitar and downtuned the strings an octave so I could play along to Iron Maiden records. I then rented out an Ibanez Roadstar II bass from a local music store, that was the first 'proper' bass I ever played. A few months later I took my saved up birthday and xmas money and went to the same store and bought me a Slammer by Hamer P-bass knockoff and a crappy 25w Rebel amp and 23 years later here we are.
