First bass you ever touched.

I started playing classic guitar with a friend. What I didn't know is that I used to play the bass part on every song we played, so I bought a bass.

My first bass was a Squier Affinity P-bass. Still have it.

I was asked to play bass in a band but had no bass so I went to the local music store which actually was mainly for Pianos which i was always at hanging out playing baldwin grands..they sounded so nice..anyway they had a deal with washburn and only had washburn guitars and basses..so I picked out this which I think is a force 40 or something like that and bought it with financing, big mistake..lots of interest which at 17 I knew nothing about..this pic is not my actual bass but it is exactly the same..

@dbsfgyd1 I’ve unquestionably bought quite a few basses in the last several years. I did have about a twenty-year lull between 1994 (the end of grad school) and 2014 where I think my only purchase was a 90s-era MIM 60s Reissue Jazz Bass (that became my only bass at that time).

Right now I own seven basses, but two are in varying states of disassembly (i.e., “projects”).

A 70s cheap Jazz copy, TSB and tort, FTW. I played that bass while learning to play guitar. My buddy’s dad was teaching us how to play. He had two acoustics and a bass. My buddy and I would switch between acoustic and bass as we practiced. We usually played Beatles tunes together sing we had a songbook to work from. That would have been around 1979/80.

Just asking (as if I really need to), how were the acoustics in that gym?

Acoustics? Well at the time I really did not have a lot to compare it to and we gave it no thought. But it is safe to say perfectly awful!!!! If you look at those cheesy speakers on the wall and Basket backboard, that was our PA. Probably a 20 watt Bogen. State of the art at the time. I played through an Ampeg B-15n. Boomy to the max in there. That was my first bass. There have been many since. In my old age, I'm back to the Precision.

I had taken guitar lessons for a few years starting around 8 years old. When I was around 12 we were playing my friend's table hockey game in his bedroom he shared with his older brother. His older brother was the singer in a 50's band. He was thinking about taking up the bass and he had a cheap Japanese Hofner Violin copy in the bedroom. While I was waiting to play the winner in the hockey game I picked up and noodled around on the bass. That moment planted the seed that didn't sprout until 30 years later!

I’ve played in few of that style of gym. In fact, your pic is almost a dead ringer for mine high school. Must have used the same architectural plans.

The absolute worst room I ever played in was the basement of a Masonic Hall in Erie, Pa. The entire room was finished with glazed tile. It has pillars spaced every 8’ also cover in tile. The only things not covered in glazed tile, the ceiling, floor (not glazed tile, but tile none the less) and the tables and chairs. That was was 40 years ago and I bet the sound is still reverberating in there.

A black Series 10 owned by my cousin, circa 1987. It was enough to hook me on bass guitar, and I'm still hooked today.

'64 Moesrite ventures 4 string. Obviously not this exact one, but it looked exactly like this. It played like butter as well. This one is going for over $5k!View attachment 3977442

I think it was the upright bass used in my elementary school's orchestra. I played cello, and my buddy Bruce played the bass, and I vaguely remember trying it before rehearsal. I think I first tried an electric a few years later, when I regularly played music with another friend who played bass, drums, and guitar, and was fantastic on all three. I think the bass was a Yamaha. I don't specifically recall playing it, but given how much time we spent jamming together, I probably did.

Otherwise, it would have been my first bass, a black/maple Peavey T-40 I got new in 1983.

1989 April or MArch. The classic guitar of my brother used like a bass...I've used it for few months like this I remember the Brand Prudencio Saez Guitarra de Artesana estudio model.

Mine was a 2009 Squier Affinity Jazz (blue). It was birthday gift from my wife at the suggestion of a mutual friend who needed a bass player to jam with and knew I had previous musical experience. A great place to start, though. I did not care for the relatively weak and thin voicing of the pickups or how narrow the neck was. Nevertheless, I learned a LOT on that bass. I traded it in to help offset the cost of my 4001 C64S. It probably covered the cost of the latches on the case...

For me it was my dad's '61 Jazz bass when I was a little kid.
