Wash coat down on body. Next up will be grain filler, sanding back and ~15 coats of tru oil with 0000 steel wool between coats. Then 2 coats TU with no wool.

First Build - And May My Mistakes Be Minimal

0000 steel wool then grain filler dyed black. This is second coat. May not need more than 10 coats I suppose.
Haven't checked in for a while, that is looking fantastic. What's the difference between Tru Oil and Watco Danish? Both penetrating oils that harden in the grain, right? Is Tru Oil thinner or thicker, harder/softer?
Thanks! I've never worked with Danish oil, but I believe tru oil forms a harder finish? I may have some in the garage. I'll compare ingredients in a bit.
Can the woods you used be found at Home depot/Lowes or is there a specialty shop in the Portland area?

Mr plywood is good as well. Home Depot is pretty much lumber for construction as opposed to woodworking.
I live on Cape Cod, no local yards carrying any exotics. The closest decent yard is about 1 hour away. I had to mail order hard rock maple, the only local yard that had it keeps it in an unheated or climate controlled warehouse, they had no idea what the moisture content was. The "postage and handling" (aka "more profit with no relation to actual postage or handling") is what kills me. I only buy plywood, mdf or poplar at Lowes or Home Depot, mainly for jigs and templates.
A tape measure and board/ft calculator app are you friends. I know Crosscut will cut boards to size, which is nice. Careful of those pricey exotics!

I'd love to have to opportunity to visit either store.

Gilmer has great woods. However, they cut "luthier wood" from their choice boards. So, it can be quite pricey. I guess if you are in a hurry they'd be perfect. Nice people too. Just not for budget-conscious!
