First Build: SC5 Headless

Back working on the bass for which this thread was started. When I started shaping the neck I decided that the little wedge of Ziricote that I put on the back of the neck wasn't going to look like I thought, so I had to carefully take it back to the body joint.

Just a little more to clean up. The rest of the neck is about 90% done. It looks nice and smooth.

I decided to try and get a little fancier with the neck shape. It was pretty much flat on the side up where it joins the body. I don't know how well it's going to show up in the pics, but I managed to carve a little meat out of that area so it actually feels more like a rounded neck up in that area.

This would have been much easier to do before I glued the neck on. This little file made the job a lot easier.

Long overdue progress update.
Hardware has been fitted. Electronics have been figured out and test fit. All that's left is final sanding, finishing and set-up. This one might be done by spring.

Because the body is pretty small, I wanted to try and keep the controls out of the way and towards the back. Everything fits and there should be enough room for a pair of 9V batteries.

I may change the jack location. It ended up being a little closer to the mid control than I wanted. It might get replaced with a mute switch and moved to the side.

I wasn't happy with how the fingerboard turned out, so I re-levelled and polished it. I used a ROS with micro mesh pads to polish it last time. This time I did it by hand with a sanding block and micro mesh pads. The board stayed flat this time and I'm happy with the shine.

Glad to see this one getting some love lately. I love the shape. I've never liked the look of single cut basses. This one has something about it that is actually quite pleasing though. And yes, the fingerboard looks much better now.
 
Thanks devo_stevo. The shape was inspired by a custom bass that I had build for me a few years ago. I kept the elements that I liked and changed the ones I didn't. It seems like it's going to be a very comfy bass to play.

I'm not sure what happened with the fingerboard. I thought the ROS was supposed to give you a better finish. Oh well. I'm just glad I went back and fixed it.
