First Cigarette....

what about smoking pot, should anyone start that?

It's proven that marijuana is less addictive and dangerous than alcohol and tobacco. Illegality of marijuana is a strange law to me. But that's just me.:ninja:

Winrar!

@ the OP, I reccommend you get addicted to nicotine patches instead. That way you can sit up the back of the school bus sticking nicotine patches on your arm and saying "Man, that feels good". You will also be (sort of) on your way to quiting if you ever need to.

That is so badass. :cool::cool:

My girlfriend started smoking recently, I have a deal with her - she has a ciggy, I get sex... it might be a bad thing to do on my part... but then I think... nah.

But she's not addicted or anything like that though... one every 1 to 2 days kind of thing.

I just don't get smoking... I've smoked before of course.. to see what it's like, just doesn't do anything for me. A beer or something works just as good ;)

While admittedly not knowing the full meaning of nihilism; I find it ironic that you want to feed into the evil empire of tobacco but call yourself a nihilist.

Honestly, all money ends up in the coffers of CEOs and/or the Government. How? Well, CEO's run all the companies that MAKE STUFF, and governments tax. Hell, they tax me when I buy them, tax the profits of the store selling them, tax the profits of the company making them and even tax the farmers and logging companies etc. that farm the raw mats.

That, and I figure we all gotta see the reaper sometime. I also figure Im just taking a little control over how, and a little bit of when, while doing something enjoyable.

WoW alone isn't gonna do it, so..... ;)

how dare you exercise personal choice/freedom...

Its the only real freedom/choice anyone has.

Indeed, smoking could be the emotional release he has been searching for and negitive peer pressure will only be a hinderance to his well-being.

Refreshing viewpoint.

Dear NINFAN, you have some attention. Happy now?

Hey now! Just figured I'd dabble a little in OT. Didn't realize that OT was all that popular, since this is a bass forum..... Cool that it is tho :D

I once read a study that suggested that a jar of peanut butter is more radioactive than the outside shell of a nuclear reactor. Could be true - but who cares?

Awesome!

Romance and exploration are not dead if you'd peel your eyes away from wikis and snopes for a moment. Am I the only one that remembers what it's like to be a child and know what everything smelled and tasted and felt like?

Edit: NINFAN - I don't smoke, nor do I advocate it. I know it seems like I'm supporting it. I'm not. Rather, I support fixing yourself by whatever means you can - if a pack of smokes lifts whatever shadows lay across your heart, lung cancer might be an okay price to pay for not living a stagnated version of what life should be. It is your call to make, buddy.

That's prolly the nicest thing that's been tossed my way in quite some time.... thanks :)

Ah, so easy to say when you're young. Guarantee you're under 25, maybe under 21. As has already been said many times in this thread, see how enjoyable the whole smoking deal is once you start dealing with the financial and medical consequences

Incorrect. More than a half million American people are employed in the tobacco industry. That's a lot of people with a roof over their heads and food on their tables.

Wow, I guess that makes it all better in make-believe land...

From the CDC website:

- 443,000 preventable deaths annually
- 8.3 million preventable illnesses
- 150,000–300,000 children younger than 18 months have lower respiratory tract infections.

As far as your employment numbers:

"The bulk of jobs generated by the Tobacco Industry in the U.S. are in manufacturing (48,800 employed at 114 tobacco factories in 21 states) and farming (136,000 employed in 23 states).(1) Over the past decade and a half, however, even as cigarette production rose, both manufacturing and farming jobs have been lost. For example, the number of tobacco farms declined by 23% between 1985 and 1992.(2)"

So the moral of the story is don't smoke, don't work for a tobacco manufacturer and if you grow tobacco use your land to grow something else.

Thanks,

P@

So.,, ya, basically my life is kindof a pile, and im fairly nihilistic anyways, so I figured what the hell.

Strange thing tho. I like the smell, and the taste..... I've hung out with a LOT of smokers before and its never bothered me, so I guess I really shouldn't be surprised.

Any thoughts? Last will and testament? Funeral arrangements?

Congratulations on your new path to social stigmatization and increasingly compromised health. For complimentary future hobbies you can start spitting indoors, farting in elevators, and injecting dirty needles into your body.

What the hell, right? We all gotta die sometime. May as well go out as painfully as possible.

27.5 actually. Oh, and I already have another medical "consequence" becuase Im just genetically unlucky (most likely anyways since there is no family history).

Not to rant or anything, but injecting 4 times a day because you're pancreas doesn't work isn't really enjoyable and actually costs me about a pack a day anyways. And I live in Canada of all places.

Not the biggest of issues I have either :hmm:

EDIT: seems like a heated issue  I really didn't think this would be so popular.....

I never got the "well, we're all going to die some day" argument to justify partaking in risky behavior. It's like saying that we're all going to defecate in our pants anyway when we die, so I might as well just crap myself right now instead of using the toilet.

I much prefer Cannabis, however, if you like the millions of others want to join in on smoking cigarettes, go for it. If anyone should be reprimanded for what they are doing, it should be me. Speaking on a legal level at least.

Enjoy getting ever closer to LiquidMidnight's Pant-defecating scenario. Just thinking about how much less time I would have until that makes me scared of smoking... Think about the laundry... I couldn't afford that much detergent...

anything that helps a person stand taller cannot be worthy of total denouncement.

I understand your outlook, but you only have one life to live. Romance and exploration are not dead if you'd peel your eyes away from wikis and snopes for a moment. Am I the only one that remembers what it's like to be a child and know what everything smelled and tasted and felt like?

Exactly, just one life to live. Why use it injesting poison?
There is nothing romantic or exploratroy about getting sick from smoking. If someone thinks cigarettss helps them stand taller, I suggest they should talk to a counselor instead as they would appear to have self-esteem issues at a minimum.

Want to keep that sense of smell and taste, don't smoke. There is absolutely NO way to put a positive spin on smoking cigarettes, though your attempts are interesting.

You are approaching the age when one's physiological ability to recuperate from the cumulative effects of substance abuse (regardless of which form it takes) will soon diminish.

The task of contending with your preexisting health issues will not be aided by taking up smoking.

Quite the opposite. Aside from lung damage (and wasting money: $10 CND a pack for my former favourites, Camel Lights/'Blue'), smoking will further pollute your blood stream and impair your system's ability to cleanse itself & function at its best.

If you really wish to throw money into something you don't need, then why not buy more basses? You can always sell the ones which don't suit your evolving tonal goals and recoup most of your investment--but as a smoker, you'd never be able to recoup most of your deliberately - and permanently - diminished health.

BTW. An issue like this one (in which a fellow musician publicly flirts with engaging in self-destructive behaviour) only gets heated by those who contribute more heat than light. ;)

Enough hand holding. It's time for Jerry Reed! (R.I.P.)

Another Puff

Nor is it smart to make an allusion between smoking and sticking one's head in a bucket of concrete and jumping into a pool. I don't intend to be rude - but I want everyone to realize that there is no parallel between them.

Many people find solice in their habbits. Nicotine comforts and acts as a stress relief. Idiotic stunts do not.

Smoking has definate psychological boons. Depending on who you are, these boons may very well outweigh the dangers that come with them.

Earth to Zach ... Earth to Zach ...

I've been there. Injected insulin twice a day for more than two decades until I needed a kidney transplant (and got a pancreas at the same time). That was no picnic, but I'm thankful as hell for it.

The fact that you're smoking when you're diabetic makes it even worse--as you probably (or should) know, smoking tends to dilate blood vessels, thus worsening/accelerating one of diabetes' worst effects. There's no "anyways" or "already" about it, man. Keep on smoking and your medical issues and the money you have to pay out will only be compounded. Take better care of yourself, not worse, and the odds are your outlook will improve. Believe me, I know.

Do you think that people who started smoking in the past didn't know it was harmful?
they did.....but when i was a lad everyone smoked.....teachers,doctors,even the nerds smoked......my high school was a hair away from installing an indoor student smoking lounge, and between class smoke sessions in the bathrooms were rarely interrupted by teachers, even in jr high ....being allowed to smoke in front of parents was as much a rite of passage as a drivers license......
