First Cigarette....

Nor is it smart to make an allusion between smoking and sticking one's head in a bucket of concrete and jumping into a pool. I don't intend to be rude - but I want everyone to realize that there is no parallel between them.

Many people find solice in their habbits. Nicotine comforts and acts as a stress relief. Idiotic stunts do not.

Smoking has definate psychological boons. Depending on who you are, these boons may very well outweigh the dangers that come with them.

Wow,

I've heard some crap in my time, but this is priceless.

I love smoking cigarettes.

That's great! I'm so happy for you! Maybe you'll be like me - I smoked for 33 years, spent an estimated $35,000.00 on tobacco in my years of smoking, and struggled every day to come up with the money for just one more pack of butts. I quit four years ago, pocketing an estimated $8760, and I've never felt better. Best thing I ever did, quitting smoking - better than marrying my wife, having children, giving to the needy, you name it!

But maybe you'll be smarter than I was. Maybe you'll quit smoking soon. But it's YOUR choice, I'm not telling you to do anything you don't want to do.

27.5 actually. Oh, and I already have another medical "consequence" becuase Im just genetically unlucky (most likely anyways since there is no family history).

Not to rant or anything, but injecting 4 times a day because you're pancreas doesn't work isn't really enjoyable and actually costs me about a pack a day anyways. And I live in Canada of all places.

Well if your diabetic and smoke be prepaired to say goodbye to your feet... AFAIK diabetes can cause vascular problems at the best of times and smoking will make the situation worse possibly leading to ulceration and even requiring amputation.

Long story short Don't start smoking. Yes it's a free choice but that doesn't mean its a smart choice. I dont' understand why anyone would want to start now knowing what the health risks are. Especially given that every smoker I know regrets starting and is not struggling to quit.

For the record I've been smoking for bout 10 years and am trying to quit again and it's bleeding miserable main reason to keep off the coffin nails is the bookmark folder I have of shiny things that I'll only be able to afford IF I quit.

It's not crap - it's the truth.

Consider the soldier that smokes to calm his nerves as he waits for the next mortar shell to be lobbed in his direction.

Or men like my father, who worked as an RCMP officer in charge of a division overseeing major crimes in Canada. He was a wreck some days, and smoked to clear his head and to help forget the things his work required him to see.

To say that there aren't some people out there that are comforted by ciggerettes is blind.

You and the others can attack me or my thoughts all you want, but it doesn't make my position and weaker.

Smoking - to a great many people - is a small comfort in a world that is very often sinister and unforgiving. Seeing as the universe does not bend to your will, just because you think smoking is a disgusting or useless habbit does not make it totally meritless. There is a yin to every yang.

Zach you need to realize that just because someone has the freedom to make a choice doesn't make it a good one. I fail to see how, by any criteria, the "small comfort" you mention is worth the factual, scientifically proven consequences of smoking.

Ninfan, you call yourself a nihilist, but consider that this life is the only one you have. I didn't realize nihilists were so quick to throw their lives away.

For any cigar smokers out there, just read through any article on the life (and death) of Sigmund Freud. I realize it's not the same as smoking cigarettes, but it's worthy of consideration.

I understand what you're saying, and I agree. The dangers of tobacco use are high. I posted earlier in this thread saying that I do not smoke nor do I condone it.

I also understand that it is a flawed logic to see ciggerette smoking as a wholly negitive thing. Nicotine is a drug, and it can be used to self-medicate. It is little different than asprin or lithium or THC.

I will say this again - if smoking improves your quality of life, then do it. If it doesn't, then don't. It is amazing me how many people are taking what I say out of context.

The ratio of people might be skewed heavily to the DON'T SMOKE side, but for however many thousands of people who do not need a smoke to get through their day, there is one poor soul who does.

It is good to be educated on the costs and risks and dangers of things - but in the end, a person should do what makes him or her most happy.

Excellent decision.
The trick is to correctly estimate how many cigs will give YOU lung cancer and smoke exactly one less than that number.
So.,, ya, basically my life is kindof a pile, and im fairly nihilistic anyways, so I figured what the hell.

Strange thing tho. I like the smell, and the taste..... I've hung out with a LOT of smokers before and its never bothered me, so I guess I really shouldn't be surprised.

Any thoughts? Last will and testament? Funeral arrangements?

I agree with this. Coffee is a drug. Tea is a drug. Food is a drug. Running is like a drug, as is weightlifting. Medications are drugs. Wine is a drug. All these things alter aspects of your brain and/or body chemistry. Music is like a drug. So is religion. Both alter your thoughts and state of conciousness. So what? Are we adults? Are we alive and free?
The problem with cigs is when people smoke so dang many of them. A pack a day? 2 packs a day? That's a LOT of smoke and soot. But if cigs are smoked in moderation, no big deal. No problem. I'll smoke a few in an evening and not smoke for weeks.
But even the hardcore cases that do result in lung cancer are usually after decades or even a lifetime of smoking. Nothing beats you up like AGE. The fanatic propaganda neglects to mention that.
I remember health textbooks in Jr High showing messed up cancerous lungs and I wondered how old those lungs were, and how did that person's face look? How did that person's body look? Nothing kicks your butt like age.

Maybe so. Taste does change, after all.

And good on you for quitting.

I love smoking cigarettes.

As do I. First time since *that month* of HEAVY pot use that I've been calm on the inside. In like forever. And like I said before, the fact I like the smell/taste doesn't hurt :) Also... it happens to be legal. Last thing I want is a ****ing record :(

Listen to the good advice on here. Go xStraight Edgex.

Ugh..... back in the 60's it was "free love" n shizzle that made you cool, now its the opposite  I have nothing against people being who they are, but IMO the whole "straight edge"/"purity ring" crowd is more annoying that a stadium full of smokers with me in the middle.

Some people out there would GLADLY trade lives with you.

Sure. That still doesn't make my life NOT suck.

Ninfan, you call yourself a nihilist, but consider that this life is the only one you have. I didn't realize nihilists were so quick to throw their lives away.

To me, nihilism put into a single sentence is: Nothing matters, so do what you want as long as it doesn't hurt others. I figure as long as I outlast my parents (which shouldn't be hard) the only one Im gonna hurt is me, so I'm doing it cus I want to. And it doesn't hurt for me to admit that I kindof need to. Even after just 1 pack so far. I like the effect its had and is having on my sanity.

I'd jump off a bridge, but that would involve NOT outlasting my parents. And wouldn't give things much of a chance to improve in my favor.

I agree. Moderation is not just for forums.

This. I only smoke as much as I need to. Just when things get more than a little insane in the membrane....

This is a specious argument at best. Don't ever do it and you'll never need to! Smoking NEVER improves ones' 'quality of life'. It IS a wholly negative thing. There's absolutely NOTHING positive or beneficial about smoking.
