First Cigarette....

This is a specious argument at best. Don't ever do it and you'll never need to! Smoking NEVER improves ones' 'quality of life'. It IS a wholly negative thing. There's absolutely NOTHING positive or beneficial about smoking.

bigtiny

Cadbury creme eggs have negitive health effects, yet they improve my life by a significant amount. Same can be said of computers and videogames with their inherent risks of eye strain and carpal tunnel.

Anything a person enjoys improves their quality of life. Sometimes we do things that are bad for our body because our ego enjoys doing those things; which is why we are not all superhealthy vegitarian decathletes who use public transportation.

Just because one man's vice is not yours does not mean his is any more evil.

Listen to the good advice on here. Go xStraight Edgex.
Wait. I thought you said good advice....but then you followed it up with xstraight edgex and totally lost me.

As for the rest here: I used to smoke. Enjoyed it for some of that time. I have gotten in multiple arguments with people here about smoker's rights with respect to public places and establishments. I still feel the same way. That said, I can't think of any logical reason tto smoke aside from the "because I can" crowd.

The "calming nerves" argument is BS. Millions of people deal with their nerves on a daily basis without lighting up, are they genetically superior to those who smoke? Have I evolved since I quit to the point where I'm better able to deal with crap on a ****** day? Short answer: nope. I'm no more predisposed to shooting up my office than I was 4 years ago.

Smoke if you want to. It's your right and I'm glad you have it. You're still a moron for doing it.

Mike

Really?
Several people have outlined benefits right here.
Senator Bob Dole has said that cigarettes got him through his long "recovery" from being raked by Nazi machine gun fire in WWII. He doesn't recommend a life of smoking and he eventually quit but it's not beyond him to acknowlege some irony and complexity, even in smoking. But then he's a mature adult and not a fanatic.
If a cigarette calms and soothes a person then it's a benefit. If it tastes good to a person then its a benefit. If the experience is pleasurable then it's a benefit - whether or not your indoctrinated morality allows you to see these facts.
Many things in excess will kill you. In fact, excessive food or booze will kill you sooner than smokes. But so what? Food and booze are ok too. I like them both. I like all three.

I don't think smoking makes someone a moron.
At minimum, it stands in opposition to crusader crap and that's worth something to me.
I advise ALL to smoke in moderation (for health) but enough to blow some in a fanatic's face.

I quit last year.

It was easy after I counted up how much money I spent smoking in a year (about $2500 on just the cigarettes) and imagined buying a Rickenbacker and then burning it within a year and starting over with a new one.

Then I just picked a week, decreased my smoking over that week until the last three days were like 4 cigarettes a day and kicked a 4 smoke a day habit as opposed to 20+ habit.

Since I quit, I now have more money. Enough that I bought my first house. I also picked up a new car a few weeks ago.

Times are good. :)

I don't miss that crap one bit.

So smoking for a cause? Smoking because "the man" tells you not to? That's pretty laughable, don't you think?

Mike

You are correct in this Mike, but do you see that you represent the opposite extreme compared to John? Extremism in any one thing is bound to seem fanatical to those who do not accept your particular ideology.

Freedom of choice and the ability to measure the weight of an action and its pros and cons for ourselves is the true hallmark of human intellect. To throw ourselves entirely on one side of the fence or the other is to embrace ignorance.

There are always two sides to any coin. Try to see the big picture.

Not at all laughable.
Well, laughable in the sense that blowing smoke in a fanatic's face is joyous.

You must be smoking in a weird part of the world. I smoked for 14 years and can only recall 1, maybe two times when someone get indignant enough to warrant a verbal reply, let alone blowing smoke at them. Having smoked a minimum of 20 cigarettes a day (usually 30-40), that's over 100,000 cigarettes and only two incidents. Hardly enough reason to continue smoking another 50,000 cigarettes to spite the next guy that dared say something.

Mike

I agree, I'm surprised a thread like this was actually started...who actually is proud enough to share this?

/wave

I wouldn't use the word proud tho. Saw there was an OT forum and just felt like sharing....

The OP... almost as proud as he is of his Nihilism.

Mike

Happy to be a Nihilist. Happy. Happier after a ciggy.

blowing smoke in a fanatic's face is joyous.
2 satisfactions in 1!

Great way to spend a few minutes. Unfortunately most fanatics don't disappear in a cloud of smoke like a magician :hmm:

EDIT: also, its funny looking around as im walking to work or home from (@ 8am and 6pm usually): there are quite a few peeps (also walking) lighting up or already lit. Often more than those not. Walking. Exercise. Smoking. I find it interesting, not strange.

I don't see myself as representing any extreme. Please paint the bigger picture for me, my painting arm is tired.

Freedom of choice and the ability to measure the weight of an action and its pros and cons for ourselves is the true hallmark of human intellect. To throw ourselves entirely on one side of the fence or the other is to embrace ignorance.
You must have missed a few of my other sentences. They more or less negate the need for the above to be directed at me. It sounded really good, but I can't award you any points because it doesn't apply. Sorry.

Mike

Well my friend, like playing bass, it's a matter of moderation and timing.

I would, Mike. However, I've come to see that this argument is only going to continue to circle itself into eternity. This fact is a kind of encouraging, actually.

Suffice to say that while I see your points; I don't agree with them. There are good things to be taken away from smoking - just maybe not by you.

But John, blowing smoke in a prude's face is probably not one of those good things, my friend - but hey man - do whatever makes you happy.

Sure. That still doesn't make my life NOT suck.

Get over yourself you POS. Go live on the streets for a week, go take a look a few other countries. Go look in the DAMN history books. If you can't afford to go somewhere join the army they will pay your way to ****** places so you can see how not so bad your life really is. Ungratefull m.......

Better yet, smoke all you can, when you get old and are f##king sick you will tell other kids to learn from your mistake and not do it. They will of course do it anyways because they have the mindset of a two year old. After all 50 is like a million years away it'll never happen right?

They have people dieing of cancer that would love to trade their bodies and lives for yours. After all it would be a win win wouldn't it? Youd get what youd wanted a destroyed body and life and they would get what they DESERVE.

Feel free to give me an infraction if needed or ban.

Im not agianst smoking honestly, I wish people wouldn't but its a freedom do what you want, I dont jump on anyone about it but my mom. Her mom died from it and she will to, she already has all sorts of medical issues steming from smoking but refuses to quit. But people like you who thing their live is so horrible and you said it yourself why not make it worse.

Well, if you're bowing out of the discussion, take this with you: I never said there weren't good things to be taken away from smoking and you'd be hard pressed to find a statement I made that even addressed that aspect of the discussion. Have a good one.

Mike
