For someone who doesn’t own either cab, is the consensus that the ref cabs do sound better? The weight equivalent to cabs I’m used to, but lighter is a nice bonus.
I posted this to the "show your Berg" thread too, but here's a quick comparison. Same settings in all videos.
Did you compare the NXT to the Ref? Just curious how much Jim is closing that diff down.
Well damn...through my laptop I actually give a slight nudge to the HDN
I like the HDN.....alot
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this awesome comparo video
Well...Why would you ever feel the need to switch?.....If you are happy....Be happy....From that video, I prefer the high end on the HDN's. I suspect they will cut through a band mix more. I've had HG cabs and those tweeters are too smooth for me. I do like the NXT and can't wait to try it and compare to the HDN in real life. The mids grunt in a different way between these cabs. I'm still really happy with my HDN210 x 2 stack and don't feel the need to switch it up just yet...

I'm torn between trying the NXT and Ref cabs. Maybe to go with a Forte HP. I do like the weight savings, but for the money I would want the best sound. Do the NXT get louder before breakup? (higher Xmax, maybe?). I think the nearest stocking dealer to me is Austin, and I don't think I'll be able to get there any time soon. I may cross post this in the Berg forum. For me, *THAT* is the million dollar question. How close do the NXT cabs sound and respond as compared to the ceramic REF versions.
There doesn't seem to be much info out there to answer that question. Since Jim is touting the NXT's to sound and respond more like the REF versions, I would think (hope? expect?) that there would be more info other than the white paper that was provided. You know....."real world" comparisons by bass players.

Another thing I considered after posting the comment above - you have to take into account - proximity to boundaries when comparing two cabs.I can see the argument for the HDN's in a live band mix, but the NXT's sound more balanced to me (through decent earbuds).
If I want a mix-friendly tone, I'd rather get there with EQ than to have that ever-present. Both views are valid, but I'd rather just start from balanced.
The real truth is in the ear of the bassist, so just expressing my personal preference.
I also thought that between the 210 & 112 that the 112 sounded more balanced as well.
I'd love to a/b the NXT322 & the NXT212 live.
I was leaning 322 based on various comments, but now???

So that can definitely impact the comparison between the 210 & the 112 as to which sounds more balanced.
Ordinarily I not of the camp that says- Neo speakers don't sound good. I think they do, except the REF, despite it's hefty weight, sounds better to me.
NXT 210. Bit more low end, and the tweeter is better.
