First p bass ? what would you suggest

I know the Squires are great but i belive a well selected mim is an upgrade. I belive they have a bit better hardware and electronics.

And alder instead of basswood or whatever.

Squier Matt Freeman signature P bass. $379 new and I put Fender Vintage pickups, 250k pots, and hipshot tuners on it. It sounds and plays better than any mim p bass I have ever played IMO.

Honestly you can't go wrong with a mim p bass. Finish is good, quality is there. Sounds nice, plays nice, mine weighs in just under 9 pounds. I bought mine and immediately needed a back up for it. That was four years ago.

I bought my first Fender a couple of months ago, a MIM Blacktop. Plays nicely, sounds awesome and I saw one guy in a review say he'd copped one at his local GC for $299.

My MIM Fender is great, satin tinted flamed maple neck, rosewood fingerboard middy pickups that growl like the dickens in the mix. CV 50's is a bit brighter one piece glossy untinted maple neck, High mass bridge really the only differences I see

We took a field trip at work to all the music stores in town last week, and all 3 of us liked the feel and tone of the Fender MIM basses over the MIA ones. Go figure.

Bought a blacktop p off the classifieds a while back and love it. Granted it's my first p, I have no others to compare it to. However compared to the mim jazz I had the differences are very noticeable. The best way I can describe it is like this: The jazz is a light milk chocolate while the btp was an intense dark chocolate with a mild sweetness to top it off.

Pups have great tone if you decide not to swap them out.

I just wanted tto say, you really shouldn't just dismiss Squiers out of hand. Give them a try, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Since you want a Fender Precision, not a Squier or Schecter or Lakland, get a Fender Precision.
I missed out on a nice Lakland Skyline I saw at Guitar Center a few months ago. I really liked the way it played and the sound was very impressive.
I was looking at the Squier Classic Vibe 50s P bass and was even more impressed...because of the quality for the price it was.
But since you don't want this or that P bass, I'm not going to suggest you buy a non-Fender P bass.
There are people who would rather see you show up at a gig with a Squier Precision bass with a Fender logo (some who wouldn't really know the difference at a glance) than see you walk in the door with a G&L LB-100.
Sad but true.
You don't really have to impress anyone else, of course, but it helps to give a fickle public what it wants, especially if someone wants a bass player with a Fender and you want a Fender...
Nothing is more important than wanting a particular bass, finding exactly what you want, plugging it in and discovering that it feels, plays and sounds great, and walking out the door with it.
Sometimes it just might be the Fender you've dreamed of.

I have a vm squire fretless jazz,its great but id,prefer a Fender.

I played an American Special yesterday while trying out some effects pedals in my local store. Very nice indeed. IMO better value for money than the Am Std.

Unfortunately I don't need another bass, and it was the typical sunburst with a tortoise shell pickguard (yawn).

But I would seriously consider an Am Spec.

I would suggest it because P necks vary A LOT. More so than jazz necks.
