First p bass ? what would you suggest

Lately ive been feeling the need to add a p to my arsenal ( am special jazz, vintage eb 3 and vm mod fretless). I was gassing for an active j but i think a p would be a better chioce right now. Everyone needs a p right!?. Im looking to spend in the $300-600 range. Im looking at new and used mims, am standards, rw etc. I know squires are nice but i jnow id always be looking to upgrade to Fender. I know you save $ used but if i could find a nice new mim at a discount i night consider it. It might be worth it to have fresh frets
And a truss rod i know is good etc. Any thoughts

I saw a used am std. On GC s website with case for about $650
Im thinking if i can afford it an am standard would be worth the extra $
If it is in decent shape. Im afraid ill always want to upgrade to a US made p if i get the mim. On the other hand i love breaking in a new bass.

How about an Ibanez Silver Series Lawsuit P? Vintage AND P-ness without the uber price!

Seriously, I think you'd get a great P sound from the Fender line, perhaps a used G&L or something made in Japan from the 70s or 80s (Ibanez, Westone, Tokai) might be had for that money.

Personally, the G&L LB-100 is the stuff for me.

Caught my eye the minute I saw it. Never wanted a P bass with the exception of the Blizzard Pearl Deluxe Active model.
Now, I just can't seem to put this one down.

Ive heard they can be great but if i could get a good deal on a good used am standard id be happier in the long run. More of a long term keeper to me.

Check out this old Greco P. Sounds great.


For a new P in the low end of your price range, I recommend the Squier Matt Freeman. Mine is very nice. The neck being a highlight. Chunky but comfortable, perfectly smooth frets and the neck pocket is super tight.
It's not super light (9lbs) but I'm sure you could find a lighter one.

Im sure its a great bass but i gotta have as Fender. Although i love my vm mod fretless i hope to upgrade to a japanese or US Fender fretless at some point.
