First Post - OR - Ampeg 810E Restoration (you pick)

i am still waiting on an electric sander to move forward with the project. i am still undecided on the color scheme i want to go with... as the grill is white, i am going to stick with it for now. i am now between black or white Dura-Tex (diy bed liner) for the cab. i am also going to add skill rails as disused here... http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=369210

i am also looking for surface mount spring loaded handles for the bottom of the cab.

really, i just wanted to post about how much i'm enjoying the fridge. i love the sound of my schroeder cabs, but the sealed cab of the svt is so much more present in a loud bad setting- it is felt as much as it is heard.

It's been a while, but here's where I'm at:

I HIGHLY recommend the ebay sales person Jam4jaudio (I think that is spelled right) and here's why:
  • Cheapest tolex per yard (54"X36")
  • Black corners
  • Other hardware (I am getting 4 new feet for my rack mount from him too)

Here's the kicker though and why I would buy from the guy again in a heartbeat - Shipping overages refunded directly to my paypal. I bought three items from him and I did it right to combine two of the items, but I found the third later and ordered it. I figured I messed it up so I would just eat the other $5 bucks shipping on the black corners. The next day I had an email that indicated that I was refunded shipping on them! I'm always happy to meet someone honest and get treated correctly - so this thanks goes out to Gary for looking out for me.

Moving on . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The tolex and black corners are coming and should be here tomorrow. I picked up some laminate/vinyl glue and 60 grit sand paper from Lowes on the way home today & borrowed a sander from a friend.

The kickplate just got done at the Rinoliner joint today and looks great.

I have the red piping for the grill cover and plan to attach it tonight.

So Wednesday/Thursday - sand sand sand - vacuum/wipe with cloth - Friday/Saturday tolex installation - Sunday hardware installation.

- NEEDS -
Casters!!!
I am looking for some high-quality aftermarket casters. They don't have to be specific to ampeg and I would love red wheels.

Anyone have a lead on something like that???

_daniel_, I got some pretty nice casters from Harbor Freight...you should check them out if you have one close by...they also have a website.

How much tolex did you order? The pieces are 36"x54"...so curious how many full pieces you got...as I am picking up my SVT1540 next weekend and want to have the tolex in advance so I can start stripping it down and putting some new tolex on it (it is painted PURPLE right now :scowl: )

Thanks for the tip sleepy_monkey, I will check Harbor Freight, there is one 45 minutes from my house.

After having my wife help me measure (she is a genius with textiles) I ordered 4 yards @ $14.99 a yard. The color was "Hot white."

Little Update:
  • Got holes drilled through on the kick plate, so it's ready to go.
  • Red piping installed on the speaker cover.

This afternoon:
  • Prep for sanding
  • Sanding

My 810 overhaul got pushed in a corner after getting the tolex ripped off. I talked to the local bed liner guy a few weeks ago and got a quote for covering it. I was thinking thats the way to go on it. But waffeling on getting it done. It wouldn't match my other cabs if I do it. I need JohnK's resto skills you have such a talent John. BOB

Hey Dudes,

Sorry about the long time incommunicado. We (my wife and I) randomly decided to refinish our hardwood floors and as you may have gathered we are a DIY kinda people. The floors were a hell of a job moving, sanding, preping, sanding, finishing, moving back . . .

So here's the status of the 810E project - still need casters and I need to machine the rails otherwise complete!

PostScript - The 45 degree angles on the 810E are a major $bi7<h$ to cut. . . holy cow. I almost thought my project was lost there for a minute. Thankfully my wife has EXTENSIVE experience in fabrics and textiles and helped me out with the hard cuts.

When I am 100% done I'll get some better pics up but those should give ya the idea.

So hey guys, just wanted to let you know that this thread has been very helpful to me. I just got an old SVT-810EN, now I know this model is not "old" at all, but it looked like it was about 40 years old. I guess this amp had been passed around the local scene for a while..I heard the story was that it was first owned by Autopilot Off, then Up Up Down Down, and then it was sold to my friend who played bass in a local band..Anyway, I guess he needed some money to pay off a weed dealer, so I landed the SVT 810 EN along with a Marshall 100W head and a Korg strobe tuner, both in a rack mount. Here are some pics of how it looked and how it's coming. First, I stripped everything off and filled the dings with wood filler. Then, I spray-painted the corners and head feet holders black. I just finished applying two coats of supercharged orange paint underneath where the tolex is going, just in case it gets ripped in the future, it won't be AS noticeable. Will post more pics as I go along...

I am doing pretty much the same restoration as shown above in white, only with a different color piping. Haven't decided what color to do yet, but the white tolex looks pretty sexy! I was lucky enough to pick up the cab for a measly $150, and after a whole lot of wood putty and sanding I think it looks pretty good. I'll post pics soon. Any progress on the orange retolexing? Orange was my second choice color and I'm curious to see how it looks.

Well, we just finished up last night and I'll have to say I didn't think I'd ever get this thing done. Fortunately my friend is pretty good with his hands so we got together and over the course of the last two nights, finished the amp. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
