First recorded song you ever remember hearing…

I think I might have been just about 2 years old and was on our phonograph player. Yeah, it might be corny to some of you, but it's still one of most upbeat and happy ones to me. That and he's just a great trumpet player. Any others have a way back one to post this day? ;)

Two of my oldest memories around recorded music was listening to "Dream On" by Aerosmith. I could never sit still and I remember being awestruck by the gong hit at the end.

The second was riding a car with my mother and the song "Touch Me" by The Doors coming on the radio. My mother was swooning over Jim Morrison's voice and the lyric "I'm gonna love you til the heavens stop the rain/ I'm gonna love you til the stars fall from the sky"

I was probably around 2 or 3 for each of these.

I don't remember the first recorded song that I heard, but I remember some of the first cassettes that I ordered from the Columbia House Tape and Record Club. Chicago 17, Footloose Soundtrack, and Air Supply's Greatest Hits, Toto IV, Journey Escape. I think you got six for a penny, and I don't remember the last one. My tastes in music improved.

Probably BTO's "Takin' Care of Business". I was only 1 or 2 when it came out in 1973, and while I'm not sure I was that young when I first heard it, I do somehow remember hearing it on CKLW-AM 800 as my mom drove around doing errands.

I know those feels... the first recorded music that I owned consisted of several 45's my mom gave me:
  • Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane
  • Beatles - Rain/Paperback Writer
  • Beatles - Please Please Me/From Me to You
  • Cyrkle - Turn Down Day/Big Little Woman
  • Barry McGuire - Eve of Destruction/What Exactly's The Matter With Me
  • Tommy Roe - Dizzy/The You I Need
  • Napoleon XIV – They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!/same "song" backwards
Funny, I never really owned any vinyl LPs. I did play the crap out of my Mom's though, she had a ton of great titles.

Later, my Dad (RIP) gave me an 8-track tape deck and a mess of 8-tracks:
  • Queen - News of the World
  • A compilation of old western songs that included Cowboy Copas - Alabam, Johnny Bond - Hell's Angel's, and others
  • Gordon Lightfoot - Summertime Dream
This went on until the tape deck ate Gordon Lightfoot. I was gutted... now how was I going to listen to "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzergerald"?

Now much later I got my first cassette deck. My first three cassettes were:
  • Culture Club - Kissing to be Clever
  • Police - Synchronicity
  • Men at Work - Business as Usual
The first cassette that I bought was a KTel compilation called "Hit Explosion". KTel put out many compilations with that title, this was the 1983 release with a ton of great songs:

The first CD I ever bought was around 1990: Chicago Transit Authority.

No idea what the 1st song I remember hearing on the radio was, but the first record I ever owned was given to me by my cousin, when my parent's gave ma a Kenner Close 'n Play for Christmas. I had no records to play on it, so she gave me, "Why Because I Love You," by Frankie Avalon. Played it 1000 times. Then she gave me, I Want To Hold Your Hand, B Side, Saw Her Standing There. Played that 2000 times.

It's hard to tell to be truthful. But if I were to hazard a guess it would be "Your Cheatin' Heart" by Hank Williams. It was C&W in my household until I was old enough to use the dial on the radio by myself. I remember when Elvis Presley came out, and my mom was scandalized by his 'moves.' No rock and roll.

On Edit: If we are talking about the first record I owned it would be much later, after I graduated from night school. We were very poor and did not own records or a record player. I worked through out high school, and when I graduated I bought a cheap ($75) used car that had an 8 track player in it. I bought the stones album Flowers to play. I plated it until the tape twisted and broke.

Whenever we were getting ready to go somewhere he'd be the first one ready then he'd sit down with his guitar and sing and play while the rest of us got ready. When he got out of the Army and we quit moving every few years we got a piano and he'd play it and sing while he waited on us to get ready. Up until about 10 years ago you always knew when he was content because he would whistle or sing a song while he was working. At 89 he's no longer able to whistle but he's still the first to be ready and still sits and plays his guitar and sings while everyone else catches up.

How awesome is THAT? I need to try that. I'm always the first to be ready by a long shot. (Wife and two daughters.) I need to just sit and strum my acoustic rather than pacing and looking at my watch. :D

Also, this wasn't the first song I remember, but it was the one that still touches me to this day when I hear it.
The Marshall Tucker Band - Heard It in a Love Song (Audio) - YouTube

My favorite crazy uncle blasted this through my grandparents' house when I was a kid. When my parents and grandparents were at work during the Summer, we often hung out there because my aunts and uncles were younger than my mom (teenagers) and were able to look after us. He would play this five or six times in a row. Hardwood floors and plaster walls made for some amazing natural reverb throughout the house. I remember the sound of like it was yesterday.... and it was 1977. I don't listen to a bunch of Marshall Tucker. But if this song comes on the radio I CRANK it.... much to the dismay of my 10 and 12 year old daughters. :D

My tastes have veried over the years as well. But there's nothing wrong with those albums either..... OK maybe Air Supply....
