First Rickenbacker!!

I know I'm on basically an 'All Ricky Lovers' thread and will get relentlessly blasted....I totally disagree. I had a Fender P Bass and sold it in the late 70's and bought a new 4001 Ricky. Beautiful Bass in natural. I played it in our band for about 30 gigs. Other than when the band turned way down (and we weren't a loud band) when we did 'Silly Love Songs', it just didn't have the bottom and ummffff needed for a rock band. It didn't cut through the mix like the Bass should and just sounded hollow. He switched to P Bass after about 10 songs into their petformance and the band sounded so much better. Respectfully...IMO this is an apples and oranges thing. I wouldn't expect a Ric to sound like a P, and vise versa. I have heard Jazz's do a decent Ric impression at times tho.
More an issue of EQ and technique, really.
Not everyone is well suited to playing Rick basses, we're just not all the same.
I only own four Rics now--no other instruments besides a Hofner copy that belongs to my dad (and I barely touch), and an Epiphone Hummingbird. I did own a couple of Fender Jazzes, and MM Stingray, and a Spector, but they're long since gone. And I am GAS free... so I think that speaks for itself. All of my various gigs have been covered by my fretless 4003 for the past few years, and the only gig I was not asked back for was a death metal outfit that I really didn't enjoy in the first place.

Had a white ric back in the 70's. I kick myself for ever selling it. Loved that bass. I'm happy for you. Enjoy and never part with it.
Well done, I'm very jealous. I'll be able to afford me a Fireglo 4003 the day after the sun explodes.
For several years in the '80's I was a Ric guy. I had a jetglo '79 4003 and a natural finish Univox Stereo Bass that could have passed for a mapleglo 4003.
I still miss the Univox all the time. And I frequently miss the real Ric as well. I used the real Ric until about '90. It was my main bass from '84 to '86. Then I got the Univox to be a backup and liked it better. Summer of '88 American Airlines managed to destroy it because it was insufficiently protected by being locked in an ATA flight case. They offered me a whole $100 damages. And that's how I became a J bass guy.
But I like the look of your new one. It reminds me to miss my old ones.

To answer a few questions:
I own a Jazz bass and Precision bass in which I'll keep for life as well. The P doesn't sound anything like the Rick and the Jazz can sound kinda like the Rick but still a large difference. Each bass is suited for its own sound and style IMO and so yes, apples and oranges is best analogy here.
I cut myself on the opening of the treble pickup which leads me to ordering an opening cover here really soon lol

love that color! i had a maple 4001 once that i had the front of the bass painted that blue,which worked ok because there was (checkerboard) binding to separate the colors. that was *many* years ago,when you could buy a 72 rick for a couple hundred bucks. (cause it was only like 5 years old at the time)
