First time I've got to say this about Ibanez...

Living in Canada I feel like all Ibanez' are too expensive. I can see exchange rate coming into play, but the price difference with the USA is more than just exchange rate. Can't do it knowing there are better deals to be had. On that note I DO love Ibanez. Just not a fan of getting "taken". Thankfully I have access to the US market thru family and can try to coordinate purchases with trips the odd time I take them.

Guys, I already apologized for my misuse of the word "gouge" in my post. I agree 100% about the whole "of you don't like it, don't buy it" thing...and I don't, so I wont. No big whoop. Yes, I KNOW Ibanez could care less about my personal opinion about the price. I was simply responding to the OP and stating my opinion that I thought it was too high.

Were are you in Canada? In the GTA (and generally anywhere there is L&M) you get more or less American price plus exchange. Didn't used to be that way - but has been since the advent of internet shopping.

Hey, don't sweat it - if you think I was beating you over the head - I was writing at the same time as you so I didn't see your retraction before I pressed "post".
Also, I was just responding NOT criticizing - you gave an opinion, I gave a differing opinion - doesn't mean either of us is in the wrong and it certainly doesn't mean we are arguing - just exchanging ideas. If everyone here are TB agreed it wouldn't be a discussion forum - it would be a mutual agreement forum and I would personally unsubscribe 'cause that would be both boring and uninformative.

Exactly, Ibanez knows they won't sell many Adam Nitti Signature basses. My guess is they will do well to sell 100 worldwide. More to the point, they will probably sell more in Japan than anywhere else because my guess is that high end Ibanez is very competitive with import boutiques in the Japanese market.

That's basicly how it went with the Gerald Veasley signature. He already mentioned it back then that there would be a handfull of the prestige models, while the rest would be the affordable production model.

i SO want to come up with a good reply to this without disrespecting adam nitti, because i think the guy is amazing, but I've never met a bass player face to face that's even heard of him...i know we know him here (i also have never met a bass player face to face who is a member of talkbass.com or has even heard of it, except the folks i met at the atlanta get-together like 15 years ago) and we all think the guy is a stud, but i don't understand where Ibanez is coming from, either...custom shop basses from Ibanez to adam? certainly, shower him with them, i say he deserves that, but a $7K sig Ibanez to hang up in a store for folks to have to google him? i dunno...

I am out in Alberta. I find that even at L&M (my main store) there is more then an exchange difference. Especially lately. Other brands though.... I'd say it is exactly US prices plus exchange. Take the Ibanez GSRM20 as an example. In USA it is $179.99 USD. Here @ L&M it is $257.99. Even with an exchange rate of 25%(about where it has been for a while now, give or take a few points) it should only be $225 CAD roughly.
Is your in store pricing better then what is on the website? Ours is bang on with it unless there is a sale.

What I see in store is usually in-line with the website - maybe I haven't looked closely enough at their Ibanez stuff! (?)
I should say that L&M is funny in that on a lot of stuff they are as good or better than US - but on certain things like effects and accessories they can be quite silly (in the bad way) - and they are very rigid.
They are also a little "looser" with pricing at the bottom-end as they know people won't ship for $25 bucks, but might for $100-200 - that's how they get away with the differential on effects, etc as well - no one is going to drive to Rochester or wherever for the difference on a pedal or cord, but would for a PBass or Tele.

Ibanez is missing the mark-

take the grooveline for example-
they have one at my local L&M that has been there for years; 2400 bucks. they had a sale last week and dropped it to a grand...no takers.
their ATK prestige is well over 2000 bucks as well.
even Yamaha and their top of the line BB2025x is 2500+.

all are made in japan but c'mon.
japanese basses used to be 200 bucks new when I was a boy.

The super high priced Ibanezes (like the Veasley and this one) are all hand made by Sugi, and are done one at a time when ordered, basically. They are not made in the Team J Craft 'Prestige' shop or on an assembly line. They are made like a Fender Custom Shop 'Masterbuilt', basically - one Master builder does the whole bass. The quality is about as high as you will find anywhere else on the planet. That doesn't mean they are what any of you really need or want, but they aren't run of the mill $1K basses with the prices raised through the roof.
