Just got back recently from Sydney, fished the start of the Marlin season up there. On Thursday we got two small Marlin, a Striped Marlin of 90-100lb and a Black Marlin of 70-80lb. I've caught a few small Blacks of that size but I've never seen a Striped Marlin that small before, absolutely beautiful little animals. So well designed at a small size. The little Striped Marlin actually hit really early, as we were setting our lures. We still had another line and the teaser to set when the fish came up. Here is some footage from that day:

Hey guys, here's some more reports from Australia. Fished the Cabo Hatteras Billfish Shootout out of Port Stephens, about 3 hours north of Sydney. Over 2 days we tagged 2 Blue Marlin est. 240lb and 300lb and a 65lb Shortbill Spearfish. Also dropped another 3 Blue Marlin, including a horse of around 500lb. We were fishing with 50lb tackle and our efforts were enough to put us into a final position of 10th place out of 111 boats. We are pretty proud of ourselves at the moment as we don't fish competition or consider ourselves pro's at gamefishing - yet, we beat some people who I consider the best skippers, deckhands and fisherman in the world.

Leaving tomorrow for a three day ice fishing trip to Lake Nipissing... Walleye being our species of choice.
Ice auger is primed and ready to make waste of the 20+ inches of ice and the weather forecast is lloking sweet at minus 10C overnights and 0C day time highs.
With any luck, I'll have some pics to put up early next week.

Good stuff!! As per my above post, I got back from Sydney on Monday after fishing a tournament. I'm heading out tonight on a friend's boat to go and fish and area here called Westernport. Going to try snag some elusive Jewfish that can grow up to around 30lb, then tomorrow morning we'll hit the reefs and try for some Snapper up to 10lb.

Cabin fever and work work work. Still cleaning up after hurricane Sandy. Hey Pete, we have Jim Gilmore director of marine resources for NYSDEC at the Freeport Tuna Club meeting in April. Should be interesting night. Did you see we might get 5 fluke at 17.5 this season?

Damn, sucks that the fishing shuts down like that for you guys!! I was out last night and this morning and managed to bag out on Gummy Sharks, King George Whiting and Southern Calamari - all these worth at least $15/kg from the markets.

Gourmet seafood feast tonight :D

I guess something is better than nothing. I hated winters here because the fishing always slowed down, but the Yellowfin Tuna and deep-water ooglies are usually on the bite offshore so there is still plenty of fishing that can be done around that time of year. I think my gamefishing run up in Sydney is finished for this season, but there are still plenty of yummy table fish that are on the bite near home that will still be there in early winter. I probably shouldn't be wasting too much time and catching more fish!! lol

The old man was out today, fishing approximately 50 miles off Sydney for Marlin in a tournament. They managed one small Yellowfin Tuna, a small Mahi Mahi and had a Striped Marlin come up and smack every lure for nearly 5 minutes before disappearing without hooking up. The season is definitely coming to a close!!

Got a phone call from my old man today, they did much better today than yesterday in the tournament they were fishing. Had 4 bites on billfish, tagging and releasing a 100lb Black Marlin on 30lb tackle. Took out champion trailer boat and came third overall, however they could've won the whole tournament if they'd tagged and released 2 of the 3 Mahi Mahi that they kept for dinner. Oh well, that's how these things go sometimes!!

For their efforts they got an Okuma Makaira 30 2 speed reel, 1000 yard spool of Momoi his vis line, a Black Pete gamefish rigging kit, 240V battery inverter, fuel voucher and a whole lot of other prizes. They're still at the presentation and are waiting for their third place prizes, will edit this post when I hear more news!!

Hope things go back to normal soon Peter. Hopefully in time for some good summer fishing!!

Here is a short clip from the weekend on my dad's boat of the deckie getting smashed by the little Black Marlin boat-side. Warning though, there is some very foul language and may not be safe for work. If you've ever seen the Aussie TV series 'Home and Away', he is doing his Alf Stewart impersonation. This has given me fits of laughter! Will have an edited video of their weekend coming soon when I receive all of their other footage.

Last Sunday was my first chance to fish Lake Shabbona since ice out less than two weeks before. The water was high from the huge amount of rain during April compared to last year when the drought took its toll.

I caught 6 largemouth bass in less than an hourI (from 8 - 15 inches). I didn't get a nibble on the usual lures from crankbaits to plastics to spinnerbaits, but as soon as I tried an original floating Rapala F3 chartreuse the bass pounced on it. It was the only thing they would even look at. Strange.

A man fishing just downshore from me had about 20 decent black crappies caught on minnows. They were uninterested in artificials.

There's nothing like that first good fishing day in the spring and the weather really cooperated with a warm 72F. A very pleasant and relaxing evening that I desperately needed.

After working 7 days a week for the last month, I went on a club cod trip this weekend. After dealing with the after effects of Superstorm Sandy, I was grateful to get a line wet.We left Montauk on the Viking Star at 7pm and had our hooks in the Stellwagen Bank at 6am.

Had some ground swell all day Saturday until late afternoon. Caught my first wolf fish, arcadian redfish and cusk. We got into the cod just before sunset for a good hour. For those of us that have never bottom fished at depths over 300ft, it gets tough to reel up after the hundred plus time. If I didn't have my two-speed Avet it would have sucked big time.

We left for home by 11am on Sunday after the morning bite. We ran down the Cape Cod canal and had a foodfest up on deck. As soon as I get my camera back I will post some pics.

Great trip. I swear I am more tired than even going out to the canyon for overnight tuna. I was reeling in my dreams last night!
