Here's the deal, short and sweet. I'm a rather novice non-gigging player. Long story short, I just play along with my record collection and play for the personal enjoyment, so when responding, know that my needs are not in the realm of considering how this will impact sound on stage, through a PA, into a recording console, or anything like that. Forget pro application and think beginner. Now go one step lower.
I've recently gotten to a point in my playing journey where I feel that it's appropriate to start assembling a modest pedal collection. I've done a fair amount of research and I think I have a good handle on what effects and pedals I do and don't need at this point. My one sticking point is a flanger. Sure, it's a once in a blue moon effect for most players, but it's also one of those effects that when you do need it, the absence of it is really a big deal. At least in my opinion. (Translation: "Great, I learned how to play 46&2. Now I'd really like it to sound like 46&2.")
I've noticed that when it comes to effects made specifically for bass, there aren't many flanger options out there. Yeah, it's an effect that's "tacked on" to many digital multi-effects pedals and easy to find that way, but personally, I'd prefer to stick with modular analog pedals.
My solicitation for input is two-fold. First, I'm looking at grabbing the Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress for my needs. Being a dual function chorus/flanger, my initial thinking is that it's a good bet for bang-for-buck. That said, I'm not unaware that many players feel that using pedals designed for guitar tends to drop the arse end out of the tone under the best of circumstances with a 4-string tuned standard, and they simply become horrid once you start thinking of running 5-strings or anything tuned down through them.
Fact is, I live in a smaller town with only one music store, and I'm not friends with any other guitarists or bass players. I know someone is going to say "Try it out and see what you think." Hey, I'd love to, but that's not an option for me. I'm pretty much in the "watch YouTube demos of the pedal and then pull the trigger via online ordering" camp. Which leaves a lot to be desired because, let's face it, nobody is doing pedal demo videos playing a Dean through an Ampeg Micro CL, so what I hear there is nowhere indicative of what that pedal is going to bring to the table on my modest home rig.
So that's that. In my situation, is grabbing an Electric Mistress going to be a decent purchase? I'm new(er) and have a decently un-refined ear, and my gear is budget. At this point, am I overthinking tone as it applies to me specifically, like a guy driving a Pinto wondering what kind of Nitrous setup I should put under the hood for street racing? And when it comes to analog flangers, what are some other makes/models that you guys have good reviews and experience with that I might want to investigate?
