Most of the Sugar Sex Magic Album was an NS2. I was lucky enough to be able to visit the house they were using to record with a guy I knew that was an assistant. Met Rick Ruben, pretty cool fella.
Wow, I knew he used Spector, but didn't know it was used on Blood Sugar Sex Magik! Isn't that one of the albums with the best bass playing Flea ever did?
I haven't heard of any Spectors being used, but I have heard of the Wal and Alembic basses used on those recordings. I must say that I'm not a huge fan of how his Modulus basses sound now, if he's in fact using those to record with as well now.
I saw them on both the tours for Freakey Styley and Uplift Mofo Party Plan. Flea played ONLY his black spector (with the tape over the pickups to keep sweat out). IMO it was the bands best days.... (BTW, he was playing through 2 GK 800RB's)
Later, during Mothers Milk I worked for them for a couple days as a liason....he didn't have the Spector at all.
from what i remember, FUNKY MONKS, the video you're talking about, shows him playing only a wal and a 5-string stingray.
he plays a spector in the video for "knock me down," too, although that doesn't mean that he played a spector on the recording. ...but it sounds to me that he's using one on mother's milk. maybe i'm just stupid.
BSSM is mostly WAL with StingRay 5 and another fretless StingRay, no Spector.
One Hot Minute is played mostly with an Alembic Epic and according to Flea a 4-string StingRay for Aeroplane.
that's consistent with what i've always heard, but there is some video of flea playing a black spector during the BSSM sessions (or rehearsals). i've seen it on their "behind the music" episode. i know he used to use a spector, but i don't know exactly when that went away.
I saw a program last night about the best bands of all time, as voted for by the UK public....well RHCP were on it, and they blow all other bands away, they are the greatest. O, and Flea rocks, it showed him performing live nad he just full on owns.
