I would say the change is bigger when you are playing and figure it out for yourself. The difference between Single Coil and Humbucker switching is that the Humbucker sound is "tighter", and the Single Coil sound is more "open". I personally prefer the Humbucker sound most of the time.

Seymour Duncan made dummy coil pups for Fodera. I've had them in my bass. They have a vibe.

Humbucking is generally opaque sounding to me. I think the bass takes up more space in a band that way which good or bad depending on....the situation. I find that for section playing, single coil can be lower in the mix and support the band from the bottom better without getting in the way of other instruments.

To be specific, I'm talking about situations where I'm blending bridge and neck. And in that case, two single coils is literally a dual coil humbucker with the coils set apart 3.5 or 4 inches. For mostly bridge or mostly neck, humbucking seems to work great for certain things.

I just can't deal with all the phase cancellation from having all four coils on at once. I don't like it. Just sounds harsh to me.

Hmmmm. Very cool. Thank you. By the way, I never noticed the single exposed magnet over your C string. When I was out there with you during the '07 NAMM show, I was face to face with your bass and did not notice it. That is freakin' cool! I saw it last night when I was on your website. I listened to all of the videos you have on there too. Man, that thing sounds killer!!! I always thought of mahogany being kind of bland tonally. My first Monarch and first MTD had mahogany bodies and I just wasn't a fan.

What is the purpose of having the high C with only one single magnet? Does that help to focus and fatten the sound?

Thanks for the comparison. I personally like the single coil mode in all of those settings. I would have liked to hear blend centered on both pups and then hear the difference in single/humbucker. Regardless, nice job on the comparison.

I can do that, but in my opinion you can hear the difference better with single pickups.

Good to see you enjoying the Yin Yang!! Glad you got it when you did! We've all agreed that we will no longer build more than 6 of them in a year -- WAYYYYYY too much crazy woodworking. A Yin Yang generally takes us well more than twice as long to build as a regular Monarch.

We've got 8 to build this year, 10 in 2011 and then from thereafter we are only doing 6 per year. We'll add a cool little inlay to the back of the headstock that says "1 of 6, 2012," etc...

Yeah, I really tried to get one just in time. I was really stunned by the amazing woodworking. It all fits perfect together, and it has the most punchy tone I have ever heard. And I tried a lot of different basses. The Yin Yang are truely unique and beautiful instruments, and as you said I consider myself lucky to own one :)
