Seymour Duncan made dummy coil pups for Fodera. I've had them in my bass. They have a vibe.
Humbucking is generally opaque sounding to me. I think the bass takes up more space in a band that way which good or bad depending on....the situation. I find that for section playing, single coil can be lower in the mix and support the band from the bottom better without getting in the way of other instruments.
To be specific, I'm talking about situations where I'm blending bridge and neck. And in that case, two single coils is literally a dual coil humbucker with the coils set apart 3.5 or 4 inches. For mostly bridge or mostly neck, humbucking seems to work great for certain things.
I just can't deal with all the phase cancellation from having all four coils on at once. I don't like it. Just sounds harsh to me.
