I always love to see different butterflies on the headstock of different Fodera basses..

I did see some butterflies without black accent line.. is that an option or simply based on Vinny's artistic tastes?

I guess it depends on the colour of the wood on the head - I have one with black lines on my Chestnut Imperial and I have one without black lines on my Makassar Emperor

What do you mean by split coils? I think typically that just refers to a dual coil PU where only one coil is used. As in, the two coils acting as one humbucker are "split" so that only one is used. At least that's how I understand it.

I am not sure that I will be able to explain this well, so I will also attach pictures below. What I am referring to is when you have a single coil pick up, but instead of winding one coil around all 8 of the poles (for a four string bass) you wind one coil around 4 poles, and then another coil separately around the other 4 poles going in the opposite direction. If I understand the principle, the fact that the coils are wound in opposite directions causes it to cancel any hum.

Oh I see. A linear humbucker. Yeah, those are really good. Bear in mind that you can't tap them. As Jason stated, and I agree, they are the best compromise for single type sound with no noise. Essentially a P bass PU in many respects, although I don't think they have to be wired series like a P PU is. That would make them sound a little edgier.

Hey Jason, James Genus' Fodera is pretty unique, what are the specs on it?

I'm not Jason but I believe it's an elite, ash with a maple top, rosewood fretboard and 36" scale. The electronics Jason would have to clue us in on.

I love the mute on there, as well.

James is just a monster player. Everything he does is great. Combined with Vinnie, that's about as good as it gets.

OK, here it is! Emperor Deluxe, walnut body, maple burl top, Duncan dual coils. I've played it for about a half hour, and the tone is indescribably clean and tight, with a lot of variations possible. They all sound great. Jason got the action set perfectly for me ... medium low just like I like. Wow.

I'll have the pleasure of seeing James live in Detroit in two weeks with Herbie Hancock. He is subbing for the injured Tal Wilkenfeld. James is one of my favorite players!

I agree. It will be kind of a strange tour. It is in support of Herbie's wonderful 'Imagine Project' CD. However, that CD is mostly driven by guest artists/singers, and none are on the tour. So, I don't really know what to expect.

I was really looking forward to seeing Tal live (killer player with killer tone that is kind of similar to the tone I attempt to achieve), but I love James' playing and tone also. Vinnie on drums, should be cool.

All gigs I've seen with Genus, were fantastic;from the breckers to dave douglas to,and what's his name...keyboardist with fourplay...his music is really not my thing but I ended up enjoying it very much!
That gig had nathan east too...in the audience and the playing by all was really "on" as expected!
A friend of mine couldn't go to that one and gave me his ticket.

Saw him with his original Fodera with the Brecker Brothers... that huge 36" scale ash/maple J type Emperor. That bass was huge, and sounded great. I think it recently was sold on the Fodera site... I wonder who has it!?!

Yes, I think that's the one I guess...is the new one( I take i t there is a new one since just thumpin' aluded to it a couple posts ago?).
That gig was amazing... mind you-MB's "portable studio-it appeared as though he'd taken all his studio on tour with him...,kept on malfunctioning , or so it seemed, with his midi sax playing up.

The venue where I saw it used to be my favourite concert venue.
I saw many fantastic concerts there...
It's also where steve khan's "The suitecase" was recorded...that was great ( not with james genus ,mind you, but a great gig!!)

I'm enjoying this album & I generally find HH's stuff a bit 'difficult' to listen to.

Just spotted that the bass chair swaps part way through the tour. James G is the front end then Marcus steps in for 1 gig & then Pino takes over for the rest - not a bad trio of players to call on. . .

I thought he was using that Fodera on Letterman with Herbie a few days ago? If not, his new bass looks just like his old one.
