Yeah, I think that is part of the different shaping of the back that he was talking about (it goes all the way from the upper horn to the upper bout near the strap button- which is a very odd cutaway profile for the back). I think he just didn't give a very clear explanation of the cutaway, but you can see the extra profiling goes from horn to bout.

Anyway, it's a total mess. Why would you reshape a headstock to remove a chip/dent? That thing should go for a lot less than it is.

I'm sitting here putting together an outline for a little presentation I have to give at Johns Hopkins this week. If you don't already know, Charles Limb (known here on TB as "climb"), is in fact a world class surgeon in the field of otolaryngology. Because he is also a talented musician, he got started doing some research on musicians by scanning the brains of improvising musicians using an fMRI machine. He has the musician play a variety of different kinds of music from prepared music to improvised and he collects data on bloodflow to various parts of the brain under the various different conditions. I have to speak intelligently and I won't have a spellcheck or edit button, so I'm organizing my thoughts now. It's a huge thrill but it's kind of scary. There will be some heavy people there. My thoughts are pretty well organized and I think I have some succinct and maybe even profound things to say. I just hope I don't go all "Flowers for Algernon" and forget everything.

Thanks for the plug. I'm really looking forward to the conference, and I'm not worried at all about you speaking intelligently, that's for sure. (You're actually one of the heavy people being invited to the conference, in case it wasn't clear...!) Yes, the jazz study was published in PLOS One and is open source; here's the link:

Just Thumpin',

Listening to a recording featuring Mr. Anthony Jackson and his Presentation (#10) has got me wondering about the tone he achieves while playing his signature Fodera. Could you explain in what manner the Presentation model is chambered?

Also, do you happen to know how much his bass weighs?

AJ's Presentation is chambered on both sides of the body by hollowing out some of the Alder body material before the top is glued on (which is then hand carved).

None of us in the shop are 100% certain of the weight, but we are thinking that it is around 10.5 pounds...

Very cool!

It would be great to see a Fodera coffee table book. About the history of the company, sections on their prominent players and their signature basses, etc..

Any possibility of this happening at some point? I'd buy one, for sure!
