Absolutely! The NYC is now offered standard with the 2-band preamp or for a nominal upgrade price (which I cannot post due to Forum Rules), with a Pope 3-band internal preamp that is not exactly what the full-blown Pope / Fodera Pre that is in the Custom basses is, but it cops the vibe very, very well...

Check out my avatar, it's the Emperor brother of your Monarch! I once had (and stupidly stupidly stupidly sold) the Matt Garrison 5 with the matching top as well. I was told that my Emperor was once a NAMM bass, but I don't know the real story of these tops/basses. I've seen only these three with this top, and it's been described to me as buckeye crown, although I'm not really sure how it's different from other buckeye; looks like a cross section to me but i've no real clue. Jason, any background on this series of tops by any chance? They're pretty cool if I do say so myself...

Actually I believe that my exact language is usually something like..."from the way things look right now, your instrument should ship sometime the week of the 23rd of July..."

There is a bit more "fudge" in that answer as dealing with things like the final finishing and assembly of a Fodera involves any number of factors that are not completely within our control...hope you all understand.

We generally buy slabs of wood fro tops rather than individually precut tops (although at times we buy them too). Obviously at least the two basses (the Emperor and the Monarch) came from successive sections of the same slab of Buckeye...that happens quite often. There are a great many "brother (or sister)" tops out there. Kinda cool...IMHO. BTW, if the name Buckeye Crown was ever coined, it was more likely from the looks of the figure between the neck and the neck pup as opposed to the wood itself being called that...

According to our records (which are not necessarily perfect), it was instrument number 344. It was an Emperor with a Quilted Maple top, Mahogany body and Ebony FB. It was built in 1987 and originally had Bartolini Soapbars in it...

did you mean fodera's first fretless bass or a specific bass?

i have a 1985 6-string that was originally fretless (serial number 223).

Both are very much in progress, but I cannot post more details until they are done. Mike Pope has actually shared many of teh details of his new build within this thread, but Vic's bass will be something allowing for a completely different set of techniques...stay tuned. It should be done by the late Fall...

i think (not positive) that i had the first fretless 6-string fodera.

i did have the second of the second body shape (if that makes sense), which i got in april of 1985. the fretless (same body shape) was finished in december of 1985.

if you go here, you'll see:

the top bass is the april 1985 bass. the third bass down is the bass that used to be a fretless (originally a zirocote fingerboard). i had a fretted maple fingerboard put on it about 12 years ago.
