No Worries...here we go...the first...

Fretless was a 4-string in 5/1984 and was instrument #74

6-string fretless DID get built for Steuart and is instrument #223 completed in 12/85.

5-string (mentioned above), #344, 6/1987

There ya' go fretless fans! ;)

I guess Fodera buddies may interested in this recent issue of Downbeat which features VW on the cover. Also, there is an full page Ad of Fodera Bass as well! Go get one!

nope, i have the second.

i will say that i first talked to them about doing one in around 1986-87 . . . but someone else finally convinced 'em to try it. after that it was a matter of time.

my "only if i win the lottery" bass is a 12-string fretless. (vadim did a 10-string fretless for himself, i believe).

Yes a Presentation.
Peace brothers in arms.
I have wanted this instrument since I first saw the early footage of Anthony playing it some 20 years ago.
Pickups/preamp aside, this is in my eyes his design and idea customized to fit another player.
I love the music and projects AJ is involved in.

When I saw the picture the first thing to come to mind was "Oh no... this is not going to be good...".

Nice bass and collection though!

This brings up a question that I've had on my mind for a while now. What do you all do for a living or how are you able to afford such a collection of pricey instruments? In the picture from Roger there's like $20k worth of wood strings. I'm not exactly one to talk but I only own one Fodera and would like to add another to the heard one day. So how do you guys pull this off? What am I missing?

in my case, i've been buying them every so often for about 25 years. some used, some new. i've sold/traded two and kept the rest.

at some point i want to trade a fretless 6 (1991) i have for another 6 (same vintage). the bass is amazing, i'm just looking for different body woods and truss rod configuration.

i've played professionally, but have mostly been involved in being an "artist" . . . doing my own bands/recordings/etc.

since i have kids and a mortgage, it also means i have a day job (when the econ's not killing me) at this point.

Seriously for a minute...Anthony Jackson is an amazing artist...one of our instrument's very finest. He is also one of the most dedicated people to his chosen art of any person that I have ever met -- in any walk of life.

He has sacrificed a great deal of his time, money and life to advance our instrument and several design innovations that Vinny and Joey made over the years were the direct result of working hand-in-hand with AJ to push the envelope on what was possible in building (Contra)bass guitars.

The result of this singular mission is the current AJ Presentation. As I have mentioned in previous posts, we here at Fodera have historically been quite "loose" with what was called a Presentation and what was not. Upon reflection...unfairly so. Accordingly, we have changed how we handle this. Given the level of respect all of us have for AJ and what he has done, I know that it would mean a great deal to him if we reserved the name Anthony Jackson Presentation for instruments that have the same spec as his...

Please don't flame me for trying to set this straight. Anthony Jackson is someone that I personally respect and care about a great deal and I know that he would appreciate it greatly.

I have to say that every time I hear or think of AJ, I end up on youtube looking for this footage from Grover Washington... this tone and playing is just genius. Yes, it is pre-Fodera days, but you cannot deny this playing and tone. Just thought I would share.
