Although Fodera does not use nitro, so it may not apply if their finish responds differently to steel wool than Sadowsky's nitro finishes.
careful with the back of the neck. i took some steel wool and butchers wax to the back of the neck on joeys recommendation to deal with the fact you could feel the laminates of the 5 piece neck and i went right through it. i ended having to have michael dolan re-spray a third of the neck to fix what i did. on an aside, dolan did a great job and i couldnt feel or see a difference between the section he re-sprayed and the original finish.
I'm curious to hear this, too- I absolutely hate gloss on necks. My hands are not very acidic so I'm usually not prone to this happening, but I noticed on the Fodera I owned previously that the finish it had seemed to be particularly susceptible to glossing over time.
Though were you using really fine steel wool, Joe? 0000 usually can't go through even a really thin finish. That sucks, but at least you have Dolan right nearby.

Very simple...remove all of the hardware and electronics from the bass and LIGHTLY rub down the entire bass (except the fingerboard) with 0000 Steel Wool followed by applying (and removing) a light coat of Butcher's Bowling Alley Wax...alternatively, we can do this work for you at the shop as part of an annual check-up / set-up...
Call me crazy but I dig high gloss and may buff my entire bass out...

i was using the finest wool, 0000 or whatever.probably just too much elbow grease. feeling the laminates was bugging the crap out of me so i was probably just laying in to it too much. even after that, you could still feel the laminates. having another layer of finish on there was the only thing the remedied that. even though ill never own another fodera, the 5 piece neck is something id never order again.

by the way, for what it's worth, i prefer 5-piece fodera necks. never really had the problem with the raised laminates that you did . . . it's wood, it's gonna do stuff different stuff, maybe i'm in a drier clime.

If the wood on the stringers in a 5-piece neck ever does become slightly raised, you have to first use some very fine grit sand paper or an Abralon Pad (500 grit) and a wooden sanding block so that you ONLY sand down the slightly raised portion of the neck and NOT the surrounding neck or you could break through the paint...
I brought this idea to Vinnie three-four years ago or so, as I travel a lot and always in the looks for something that can fit in a guitar gig bag and could be taken on board on international flights. I remember him not being very enthusiastic about the idea and mentioning that it is originally Ned Steinberger's design, and so it would not be fair to design/produce anything headless without referring to him.
These days, the Fodera shop has been busier than ever (even though they seem to have reduced their delivery time), and I do not think they would entertain the idea of designing something headless.
I would definitely call the shop and talk to Jason though. If you receive a positive answer, I would definitely follow in your footsteps!

Something slightly different...
are there any headless fodera basses out there.
If there are, are there pictures somewhere, and if not why not?

I had not thought about the point about Steinberger especially since there are so many companies building very nice headless basses being made (Lefay being a current favorite of mine-extremely well made and well designed instruments) and no one seems to ever mention this point
But...what about the jazzes they make wouldn't the same thing apply to fender as does to Steinberger. and...wasn't it alembic that first did active electronics?...same thing.
So in consequence there'd be nothing wrong at all really, with him starting headlesses,would there?
Regardless,it would be interesting to see a fodera with no head and see how that behaved differently to the headed ones ( a steinberger tribute bass maybe?).
Munjibunga, that is incredible! How much longer until it's in your possession? Will you go into hiding for a few days to play it?

It's ready to go on Monday, but is shipping on 7/29 so that Munjibunga can enjoy some more anticipation! Actually, he asked us to hold shipping until then. BTW, the bass sounds and plays like a dream...I got to spend some time with it on Thursday and look forward to doing the final set-up / checkout on Monday morning. It's a tough way to start the new work week, but somebody's gotta do it!
