Fodera Club Part IV

Quick one from me on the quality of the latest NYC basses.

I had a friend try out a new NYC Deluxe 4 against a Sadowsky Will Lee & a Celinder J Update.

He's mostly a 'rock' kinda guy and often plays with a pick, not overly agressive style though.

The one bass I had to prize out of his hands was the Fodera, he just didn't want to put it down :)

He much preferred the core tone & thought it more everyday playable than the other two as well.

We laid them down side by side and had a really good look at fit, finish & build quality and there really was nothing to choose between them.

Really can't fault the NYC in any way!

Vinny and Joey make great basses...marketing geniuses they are not! LOL. Actually sometime later this year (or early next), we expect to eliminate the "NYC" from the name altogether and just call them the Fodera Empire Series...

Thanks so much for the comparison. We have done a TREMENDOUS amount of tweaking to these instruments over the past 18-24 months with the goal of having them compare favorably to ANYTHING in their price class.

During this time period as we have gone through the process of re-imagining our business, we have transitioned from the goal of having the NYC series be an instrument that is fundamentally "vintage-style," to our current desire which is to make them true Foderas at more affordable price point than our full-on custom instruments...

I really like the playability and sound of my 2008 NYC 5 Deluxe.
I owned 2 (still own 1) and played several NYCs, all of them have scratchy neck pickup volume pot (stacked with tone pot). is it design flaw?

1. Wood for the NYC's is selected here in Brooklyn and then shipped to Japan;
2. Woodworking, initial fretting and spraying are done in a small shop (3 guys) in Japan that we have been working with for over 15 years. When we first started working with the shop, two of the luthiers came and worked here in Brooklyn with Joey and Vinny for 3-6 months;
3. The bodies and necks are shipped back to the us in Brooklyn where every one of them undergoes final fretwork, electronics and parts installation and final set-up;
4. Every NYC is personally worked on by me, Joey and/or Vinny;
5. They are built in small batches of 6-12 instruments at a time;
6. They are NOT factory / mass produced.

We did have some issues with certain lots of our stack pots (the top of which is the neck volume). If all of your NYC's have had this issue, it seems like you have had some bad luck!! Please email us at:

[email protected]

with your serial number and date of purchase. Since this is a known issue, we will happily send you out replacement stack pots for you Foderas which will eliminate this problem (even if your instrument is out of warranty). Sorry for any inconvenience!

Just putting out a feeler to my Fodera brethren, I may be looking to move my rare Emperor bolt on she was made for the great Latin bassist Ruben Rodriquez a few years back and loaded with killer options some no longer available at all...
Not really ready to put a full F/S classified yet ...

Yea Fodera hasn't done many but the ones they did do are fabulous and rare.
The red burst is incredible looking in person and I love the gloss finish.
Not too mention the killer Birdseye fret board-mother of pearl blocks-Ivory binding,etc...

Are you sure ? I thought these Burst finishes on Emperors are reserved for chambered bodies ? May be I'm wrong - Should be lighter then.

The birdseye board with the blocks looks killer ! These boards always remind me on basses of another company beginning with F... What was just the name ? Hm, just escaped me...

Chestnut Burl over Mahogany
Aeros (originally it had Barts, the covers are made in the F-Shop and thanks to TBer climb for the pups...:-)
New Pope pre (great !) and new hardware.
About 15 years old, sounds so great after the refurbish :)
