Fodera Club Part IX

My Monarch 6 (33" mahogany body, katalox top/back, wenge neck) is 10.2lbs, and my MG5 (33" maple body, katalox top/back, ash neck) is 10.8lbs.

Almost every Fodera I've tried has been in the 9.5-11lb range. They're pretty consistent. My two don't feel very different.

My Zons, on the other hand, couldn't be more different, at 8.0lbs and 13.0lbs!

Nice! How long before you see the URB that you commissioned?

I just saw this from the sellers thread and had to share it here. One of the most beautiful Foderas I've seen! I love when they have that extra layer between the top and the body wood,... it's just classy. Congrats again!

I have a Mahogany body bass that will be here today and it sounds like we have similar tone goals. Mine as an ash top and alder tone block though, so I'm wondering if it will be a little punchier because of the top or more mellow because of the alder. I know the tone block has more mass than a top but I suspect the top on basses has more impact than it's size would suggest because of it's location, though that's based on fairly thick tops and those with the bridge and PUP's on them. Mine is not solid.

Anyway beatiful axe! I have a walnut backed URB that I just commissioned (Commissioned a new double bass from Nick Lloyd | Robin Ruscio) so I had little fantasy that it would be cool to have a matching walnut Fodera.

The URB from Nick won't be that long- January. He has to build one before mine. I took me 6 months to find the builder, and 3 more to figure out how to pay for it, so another 3 months isn'd bad. It will have taken a year from to start to finish for my process. I

The Fodera, on the other hand, should be here in any minute!

I have MG 33'', it is little bit heavier then regular ash basses, but still very comfortable, and the neck is one of the best necks I've tried.
I really don't worry to much about the weight of a bass if it's a great instrument... and also when bass is little heavier I fell that it's also the heavier sound, but that's just me

Hey Fodera owners, this always interested me; how do Foderas sound in metal/hardcore
(regardless of your opinions on Foderas being used in the genre)?

Mine i thought sounded pretty gound this summer with my friend's brutal death songs... But a little "too" rich a sound for them, they don't need SO much harmonics or warmness... But on the other hand i NEVER play rock music, so this might also be it (i was just replacing an injured guy on one studio take)

Please remember that how a bass feels when you play it is not just about weight. I have played 8 pound Jazz basses with neck dive that are far more fatiguing to play than my main bass which is a Walnut Monarch (Yin Yang) that is around 10 pounds.

Great ergonomics very often trump weight. This is one of the things that allow our basses to sound special. Because they are well balanced, we can allow about more mass...which has a direct impact on Tone...

So my MG Fodera (33" Walnut with Redwood top) has 4,9 kilos or 10,78 pounds.... but you got to remember, this is one of the mos comfortable bases I've ever played! I really don't mind that! just perfect

That a well designed bass feels better goes without saying doesn't it?
I know many people for whom weight is a real factor alongside neck shape and dimensions,ergonomics etc, me being one of them and so would still be very interested in seeing the weights in the new, born section.
To me personally, ergonomics never trumps weight but is merely a further important contributing factor to the overal playability of an instrument.
"good tone " is subjective I think and I personally tend to prefer the tone on lighter basses.

While I am an admitted weight weenie, I will note that another factor is the body shape and the contours. The YYS body fits me well, and I've had other body shapes that while on first glance are similar, the contours are different and they fit my body differently. Just another ergo aspect that often gets overlooked.

And don't get me started on body finish materials. After playing the Fodera (and my Rob Allens) I dread picking up a thick poly finished instrument...

I was completely floored by how perfectly balanced this Emperor II is. I will have to try it on a long gig and see how my shoulder fairs, but right now I'm believing what you just said. It also feels better in the lap.

Still, I concur weights would be good to know on the newborn page, and I was happy that this bass was on the lower end of 10 lbs which seemed more reasonable to me than those creeping towards 11.

I'm sure this has come up here before, but do you have schematics for older Pope pre's? Mine's 2008 and I'm not sure if it's changed much, it looks similar. Also, can I move those jumpers on my own or should that be done by a competent tech? The MFS is set to kill and I might like to make it do the usual mid select.

I'll put up a little vid of this bass soon. I've got a good camera, you guys might dig hearing this bass.

If it's a matter of space on the page, why not list the weight in exchange for number of strings which any one can simply count and whihc is usually noted in the header for each bass description?

Well my English is not first language, but that's what I've tried to say... It's not the weight that is a problem (what most of bass players are concern) it's how well balanced the bass is and whole ergonomic thing....
