Fodera Club Part IX

So last night I had a sideman gig in a jazz quintet I play with about once a month. It literally is a "yacht club gig" - playing in the lounge of a local club where the keyboard player/leader is a member. I met him through a local jazz jam where I ended up as house bassist, and then when landed the first gig I recommended one of my drummers and dragged along my sax player (she's a monster) as we had a gig right before that first show back in May. What is funny is that I was kinda dreading the gig in a Caddyshack kinda sense. But I was blown away as the lounge was full for that first gig (and every one since) and they were a totally attentive audience for jazz.

Anywho, I normally just take a RA to these gigs, but last night took the YYS as well and pulled it out for the 2nd set as it had some tunes that could venture into a bit edgier place. The sax player looked over at me and asked, "so what's the deal with that bass, are you keeping it?" She is also in two of my other bands and I played it at gigs last Friday - she also has seen me buy/sell a couple of instruments over the past few months ;)

My answer was, "I dig this bass, it's a keep." Her reply, "good - that thing sounds f***ing awesome." Then later in the evening after an adventurous version of Take 5, she looked over and said, "damn, that thing sounds amazing..."

Gotta keep the sax player happy :D

geez - if you guys trot out my mother's maiden name and my SSN I'm gonna have to retreat to the bunker...

Yes to both - Rachelle on sax and Hiroo on drums. Currently play with Rachelle in three different bands and I've played on and off with Hiroo for 3 or so years. He's been teaching my son drums as well, though we've been on hiatus for a bit.

Small world! I havent played with him for a while, were upright gigs... Nice guy

Well, let me first say that I'm not very good with descriptions, but here goes.

It has a mahogany body, with an ash tone block, maple neck and indian rosewood fb. The lows are nice and deep,... kind of tight and focused bottom end. Makes the low end very articulate I feel.

I know that Jason refers to mahogany is being relatively "neutral" in tone(hopefully I'm not misquoting). After having this for about 10 months now, I'd have to say I agree with that. The mids and are pretty even, so when I am blending pick ups and adding EQ, I seem to have a lot of influence over the tone. I'm not sure how much of that is the pope-pre, and how much of that is the "tonal-flexibility" of the mahogany. When I was spec-ing the bass with the dealer, I told him that I tend to adjust my tone a lot depending on the style of the song and such. For this reason he suggested mahogany with dual coils and pope pre.

I'm not much of a slap-kind-of-bassplayer, but the slap tone on this thing is amazing. Makes me want to work up my slap technique :bassist:

That's a great description.

I have a Mahogany body bass that will be here today and it sounds like we have similar tone goals. Mine as an ash top and alder tone block though, so I'm wondering if it will be a little punchier because of the top or more mellow because of the alder. I know the tone block has more mass than a top but I suspect the top on basses has more impact than it's size would suggest because of it's location, though that's based on fairly thick tops and those with the bridge and PUP's on them. Mine is not solid.

Anyway beatiful axe! I have a walnut backed URB that I just commissioned (Commissioned a new double bass from Nick Lloyd | Robin Ruscio) so I had little fantasy that it would be cool to have a matching walnut Fodera.
