Jason, Can you tell us about the sound compared to a deluxe?

Hi Jason, the Standard looks great. I was wondering a few things about it:

1. What control layout is that?

Control layout looks the same as the YYS (NYC/Pope 3-band) with the addition of a tap switch for the DC pup:

vol/tone, pan, bass/treble, mid, active/passive toggle, tap toggle.

Thanks! It is the same control layout that we use for the YYS, just modified to allow for the extra dual coil switch.

Pau Ferro will be the only material offered on this model (at least for the first 60). However, this is not just any Pau Ferro..this has all been in the shop for at least 20 years and it is a FANTASTIC material. Tonally it's like splitting the difference between Indian Rosewood and Ebony...

These are wonderfully punchy and rich sounding. When building these we were going for a very well rounded sounding instrument...one that could be taken out on 99% of the gigs any player would realistically go out on.

As a bolt-on it has a bit more punch than does a Deluxe with the same woods, but to notice that you'd really need to play them both side by side.

Between the wood selection, the dual coil pups and the preamp, there are a ton of great, useable tones available. We would stack this up side by side tonally with ANY Fodera 5-string and be very confident that it will hold its own and make the person playing it grin...

I'm pretty sure the Standard models have no options available. What you see is what you get. This doesn't mean you couldn't have one defretted though.

I have a silly question...since there was a Yin Yang Standard Wait Support Group thread, how come there isn't just a simple Fodera Wait Support Group thread...how about those of us waiting for any of the rest of the Fodera lineup...

I know this post is going to be overwhelmed by the gushing over the newly announced bass, but...

I think the Fodera Club thread is the de facto general wait support group. The YYS was started because that model marked a significant point in Fodera's history as well as a bit of a paradigm shift. Add in the fact that it was announced at NAMM in Jan with first ship dates in June, along with a fair number of basses (relatively speaking) at a lower price point (relatively speaking), and hence the wait support group.

Plus we're all voyeurs at heart. I'm looking forward to seeing your YYC

I'm in! I managed to get a deposit put down for a new Emperor Standard.

I spent some time in New York this summer (at the Bass Collective) and while there I had the opportunity to visit the Fodera shop. For those of you who haven't gone there, it's worth your time, as it's a virtual history lesson in electric bass - from photos and posters of historic players and concerts to the instruments themselves. It was an absolutely incredible experience, and the entire team was super friendly and generous with their time.

Jason and I spec'd out a Monarch 4 deluxe with an ash body, maple fingerboard and single coils, and I was really looking forward to putting down a deposit and getting the ball rolling. But after hearing about the new Emperor Standard I had to jump on it. I might still order the bass we came up with someday next year, but for now, I'm very excited for this new Emperor.

The selling point for me? The pau ferro fingerboard - interestingly, I was set on maple for my Fodera, but my main bass since June has been a Fender 5-string USA jazz with a pau ferro fingerboard, and I absolutely love the balanced sound it offers!! It's really an under-utilized wood, and it's awesome to see the guys using it as the new fb material for the Emperor Standard.

So, anyways, I'm in. Finally. Let the wait begin... I'll need this support group!

Yes, Pau Ferro is an incredibly under-respected FB material. It's easy to work, has its own look and sounds wonderfully balanced and rich. In working through our initial designs for the E5S, we fought the urge to choose one of the more "popular" FB materials because we new that Pau Ferro would perfectly round out the tone of the E5S.

We are not disappointed with this choice!
