Neck width is 1.8420", and the string spacing (CTC) changes from string to string, with roughly .375" for the largest strings to .355" at the smallest (very roughly).
Thomastik-Infeld jazz rounds. Really dead ones...only because I haven't gotten new ones yet.
I didn't really like the MG strings that came with it. I use either Zon nickels or the TI jazz rounds on all of my other basses, but I didn't really like the Zon nickels on the Fodera either. So, TI's it is. It kills with these strings on it, though. I can only imagine how it would sound with a newer set.
I thought I'd end up stepping up a gauge to .095" or .100" E-C sets with the 33" scale, but I ended up liking the thinnest strings I have. Weird.

I am assuming that the 16.5mm bridge spacing is measured on centers. Is this correct?
Yeah, the bridge has equal CTC spacing.
Sure! Forgive me- I'm running on very little sleep at the moment, so I may be all over the place. Know any faculty at Yale SoM doing interesting projects, btw?
It's pretty simple: it was a combination I knew I liked. With exception to the fretboard, the entire bass matches the specs of a Benavente of mine:
(Had to steal the very dark picture, as I can't seem to find any pictures of my own.)
With my Benavente, I ordered a maple body because a) I wanted a naturally bright sounding bass, and b) I tend to like the sound of walnut and maple-bodied basses, and I think those two sound very similar. My Benavente came out pretty much perfect tonally, except for the fact that he made the string spacing 17.5mm instead of 16.5mm, which drove me insane after a while.
So when I bought the Fodera, I had it set up for the same specs: katalox top, ash/ebony neck instead of the Benavente's Ash/katalox, maple body. I swapped the fingerboard, but that was mostly because I like the feel of maple better.
I've found that I tend to like very bright sounding basses, because it means I can leave the treble EQ flat, or even cut a bit, and still have a very clean, clear tone. I hate the sound of treble EQ generally, as it is often too sharp for my taste. So a brighter bass seems to be a good solution.
The Benavente has a Spector-esque, ridiculously punchy tone that kills- give it some mids and it sounds like Doug Wimbish, but boost the bass and cut the treble and it's calm enough to do coffee-shop fusion gigs. The Fodera doesn't really have the thickness in the tone that the Benavente does, which is probably a good thing. I just knew it was a wood combination that worked for me.
Though honestly, it sounds really, really similar to a walnut/ash/ebony MG5 I used to have, with just a bit more oomph behinds the notes acoustically. The maple bass might be a bit less bright, if anything. It's hard to compare the amplified sound, as mine has LPs and the other one had SD's, but accounting for the differences between pickups it isn't much different.

It IS a Hipshot 16.5mm bridge and I hate correcting him publicly, but Janek's spacing IS 16.5 mm, not 17.0 mm...
Great posts and discussions since leaving for vacation...it's nice to be home!!
Just pre-ordered multiple copies of Rocket Science! An introduction to the Flecktones by my sister-in-law Dinah followed by early 1990's Flecktones show is what got my life path started in the direction that led me to Vic, to Vinny and Joey and ultimately becoming part of Fodera. It is amazing the paths that your life can take when you least expect it...
This dedication tells a bit more of the story...

AJ's bass is 19.0 mm string edge to string edge. 99% of our instruments are set up center-to-center and our standard is 19.0 mm...

I use my '86 Monarch (and sometimes my '10 Yin Yang) in a good old funk and classic soul covers band.
Not sure that playing Midnight Hour, I Feel Good, Disco Inferno, Boogie Oogie Oogie etc is using them to their full effect but I just love playing them and the '86 in particular just kills at capturing the sound I'm after
