I'm with you Angus. My Imperial 6 is going to have the Fodera 17.5mm bridge. A 19mm spaced six string neck has a lot of fingerboard real estate. My hands will thank me for going to a narrower spacing.

No need to be slapping on a 6 when I'll have a 4 or a 5 with 19mm spacing to choose from.

I owned a couple mid 80's passive Yamaha BB5000's with 15mm spacing. Man was that tight! Great sounding basses though!

after playing for 40+ years, and 26 years on 6-string, going narrower is not an option. i don't want to have to relearn everything. same reason i play 34-inch scale basses. i don't *feel* the longer scale or the narrower string spacing.

Oh I totally get that- I've only got about ~17 years or something under my belt, and for over a decade I've been playing the same 16.5mm spacing with 34" scale. I had a 35" for a long long time, but I never liked the feel as much, and it's actually taking me quite a bit of time to get used to the 33" on my Fodera. The strings feel very very different, which I didn't expect.

I've done the 19mm thing for a bit, and it doesn't upset me at all, I'm just at home on the narrow. It just happens to be that it allows me to move much less on both ends, so it's ideal. But for the same reasons as you, I wouldn't want to suddenly have to switch to 36" 6 string with 19mm spacing.

Variety is the spice of life...which is why it's okay that you guys have such horribly uncouth taste in string spacing. :D

String spacing: On the Imperials 20mm is the standard... And I like it!!! ;-)

I uses mine in always any kind of music. But most in jazzfusion :)

i've always figured that most guys use there fodera basses for jazz/fusion.

in that sense, i'm a little bit on an anomaly. started playing my 6-string in rock band while also doing outside jazz. i've done oldies gigs (flats on 6-strings). mostly i do my own bands that are basically out jazz hybrids: third-stream music (with e-bass), avant blues/jazz, and completely free stuff that can run the gamut from complete noise to c major goodness, and ethereal lushness to thrown-down groove . . . sometimes in the same 40-minute tune. for instance, playing l.a./mountainview/sacramento next month doing basses/effect and max/msp with a guy who does guitars/laptop grooves, and a saxophone and max/msp guy—all free improv.
