yeah man you are correct. I went to bass at the beach some years ago and Howard was one of the presenters.. Amazing on so many levels I can't even begin to explain but let me tell u just a couple. He played harmonica and piano at the same time soloing back and forth on each as well as doing lines together.. Which of course he was transposing on the harp because he just picked up any key that was there..i'm probably gonna get this wrong, but as i recall a friend of mine who's an amazing chromatic harmonica player says that levy does stuff on a diatonic harp that's basically impossible (i.e., playing chromatically).
The Flecktones have been around for a long time now in several formats and I've enjoyed and been inspired by all of them.
Howard and Jeff (along with all the other great collaborators) have been equally individual and inspiring in their own right and have helped Bela and the Flecktones as a whole stay fresh and interesting over the years.
I look forward to hearing new music from the Flecktones whoever is on board!
Hey man... Jeff is great.. Howard is great... I've met them both are they are fantastic people who bring different and wonderful things to the flecktones. And to bring this back to bass... Both are great friends of Vic's and play wonderful with him and the other members of the band. Bottom line. It 'happened' because he deserved to be there and because Bela hired him.. He fits great with the group and is a team player.I kind of agree.
From what I have heard, levy is an incredible player-musically and technically where as jeff coffin is an alright player when looking at the wider picture.
I'm sure he is very good!-But there's just soo many fantastic saxophonist out there.
When I first heard coffin with the flecktones, I just thought " how in the world did this happen???".
Now I just imagine Trilok Gurtu with the Flecktones.
I think that would be quite fun!![]()

Bela is a genius who knows how to bring the right people together to complete his musical vision.. I admire that...
Thank God he found Vic and helped bring him to us..

Hey man...
Did I leave out the all important "imho" again...
I've corrected that now.
I've heard this as well....the other harmonica player I can't get over is Gregoire Maret. Just incredible.

+1 to it all, but especially to the Vic comment at the end.Hey man... Jeff is great.. Howard is great...
