Line up the front edge of the square nut on the truss rod with the front edge of the nut...

Guys,

What is this bass? The discussion thus far implies that a number of folks already know about it, but I don't. Is this a Fodera? The closest thing I know of is the AJ Presentation, but this is not one of those, right? I must say that this thick bodied bass is AMAZING looking. Who has all the info on this? Sorry for my ignorance...

I've been spending so much time with my YYD that I've almost completely ignored my guitars. I had one of my Les Pauls out last night, and forgot how nice (and different) a thicker bodied instrument feels.

It's an Imperial II fretless...I cannot remember whether or not it was chambered. A pair of them sold about 12-18 months ago. I believe that they were originally built for David Beasley or the Groove Shoppe. This was all before my time here...

Holy S__T! 3 inches solid mahogany!!?! Joel, how do you know? It's gotta weigh 15 pounds! A Les Paul is 1 15/16" thick, a small percentage of which is maple (heavier than mahogany), and typically weighs about 9 pounds. What advantage is there in a solid 3" body?

if i remember corectly, it was made when david still worked for fodera (or at least he was starting down the road of very thick bodies then).

i just remember him telling me he was "into mass." (i told him i wasn't into that much weight . . . )

i could be wrong about this, but it seems to me that fodera may have started to make their instruments with thicker bodies based on some of their experience with david's basses. i say this because the body on my 2000s basses are thicker than the bodies on my 1908s basses.

I remember when David had it built. It's a great fretless. It probably did weigh somewhere around 13-14 lbs.

I'm not into heavy instruments so it was never something I personally wanted -- but it definitely sounded good! I had a Fodera fretless six built around the same time. That's a bass I regret selling as it was a stunning instrument (from a pure aesthetics standpoint.)

IIRC that's a Beez I checked out at a Bass Day back in the late 90's. Also IIRC it was solid.

The bass was definitely about mass.

Mass / body thickness, etc. is all about proper proportion. It's like cooking with salt. Too little and it's bland...too much isn't good either...

Thought I'd throw this out to Fodera club members first. I have a set of Aero dual coil pickups that were just in my 5 string Imperial; they work perfectly. Let me know if you're interested; no pup covers but fit the same covers as Duncans.
