Hey, I went down to the Fodera Shop yesterday and today. As always it was a pleasure to meet the team. Yesterday Jason asked if I wanted to see something special and took me round to the spray booth. Fresh from a coat of spray was Nostatic's Yin-Yang, sporting a very nice slim/fast neck, the profile looked absolutely gorgeous; Sir, your going to have a ball playing that one.
Right next to it was Wrp's Prototype full hollow bodied 6 string. Man, what a bass. Looking at it left me speechless.
Rob was working on it today rubbing down yesterday's 1st coat so I got another view of it, all I can say is "Killer Bass." The neck and heel are truly something else to behold.
Wrp, your in for a treat, as for the rest of us, were going to be blown away by the final result. I didn't want to and probably wouldn't have been allowed to take any photo's as they wouldn't have done this stunning bass any favours.
I asked Rob that if you didn't like it, could I have first dibs? he just laughed..
As always, there's some truly great work coming out of the shop.

If it was my Yin Yang then I've got an imposter at home
It was this beast. I was having the neck shaved a bit to match the YYD. It already was sick but far be it from me to leave well enough alone. It actually is a great one-two punch as the YYD is chambered walnut body and ebony fingerboard while the koa is solid alder and Brazillian rosewood. Despite those that claim that wood doesn't matter, the two basses have identical electronics but different voices due to the wood.

The body was (fully masked) taped-up and I've got to say it looked small and nicely compact. Wood choice is such a critical factor, after all, there's no point in having a bass that's physically pleasing, but somehow tonally off i.e doesn't have your tone.
I quite liked your Walnut Emp5, but having 1 x 19mm spaced bass is more than enough. I've come to the conclusion that although 17.5 is where I live, I still want to have the challenge of flirting between that and 19mm.
BTW 7.5k is a bargain for such a great piece.

Glad to hear my bass is heading into the final stretch. I'm headed to New York on Wednesday and plan on meeting my new "baby" on Thursday. Looks like I'll also have a chance to meet Anthony Jackson at the shop as well.
Ken Hollins has been kind enough to document the entire build process in pictures for me so far. I'll ask the guys about posting them here or on the Fodera site.

Quick question about the YYS neck. I've heard jason say it's their standard neck shape and it's made over at the japanese shop, does that imply that the neck shape is the same as their empire series. I'm looking for another fodera bolt on that has the same neck shape and feel as my YYS, would I get that in the empire series, or the older monarch standards?

As Ian said, the first batches of YYSs had necks made in Japan. Not sure what s/n that changed (as of Jan '12 everything is "Brooklyn-born").
One thing to realize is that all the necks are hand-carved, and often are to a customer spec. Since they do the YYS necks in small batches I think they end up pretty much identical and would be pretty close to a "standard" set of measurements. The three Monarchs that I have/had all had slightly different neck profiles. Whether it would be an issue for you totally depends on how sensitive you are to that, and if you even want your necks identical.
Sure you don't want to try a dovetail neck? Then again, that can start a nasty slippery slope
You know, I just love everything about my YYS, so why change such a big variable like bolt on to set neck. I'm sure it does change tone, I love the punch that my YYS has, not sure if the set neck would change that. I also would like the custom preamp.

I made the leap but I changed up other variables as well. The YYS is *really* good and moving to a Deluxe is arguably diminishing returns. Do I like the custom preamp better? Yes. Is it night and day? No, in fact it is pretty subtle. I will say that I love the dovetail neck, and it has really spoiled me, both functionally and aesthetically. Will the bolt-on do the job? Absolutely. The other difference is the angled headstock. That is another factor that I prefer (and interestingly enough, my Rob Allens have angled headstock even though they are bolt-on).
Explain "diminishing" returns on a deluxe. Can you explain your experiences about the standard and customs you've tried and gone through. I'd really like to hear the differences about the preamps.
By "diminishing returns", I mean that you're spending more money but not necessarily getting a huge difference in return. That phenomenon exists with most everything in life.
At the risk of assigning numbers, I think the std preamp probably gives you 95% of the sound/performance of the deluxe preamp. Is that last 5% worth the extra money? Depends on the owner. The deluxe is a bit more subtle in the tone controls. I also like the separate knobs for each band as well as the mid freq switch. But you certainly don't need those to get a great tone out of the instrument.
For the neck joint, the bolt-on design for the YYS is as good as I've played on a bolt-on. But I loved the look of the dovetail so once I knew that I was crazy about the sound and feel of a Fodera I decided to take the plunge with the YYD. Now that is a huge jump in price (YYS to YYD). But I figure you only live once. You can get into a dovetail for less of a jump (regular Monarch). Is it worth the money? Well, if you never play above the 15th fret, probably not (ignoring the subtle tone difference between the constructions). Even if you play up the neck the YYS gives you great access. But the dovetail joint is gorgeous and functional. I love the look, love the feel. It is worth the money to me. But I could have been perfectly happy gigging the YYS nonstop (which is what I did until I got the YYD). I'm just kinda obsessive...

As I am in the process of specing out my Imperial I have a ...Quick question for you Fodera guys...How many of you have stuck with the factory Fingerboard Radius...(8-19")..I have played only a few Fodera's (Which were incredible..btw)...and unfortunetly did not ask enough questions at the time...to see if they recieved a custom radius on their boards...

I didn't even know what the factor radius was...lol Wasn't an issue, I thought about having a zero radius for a while. Ultimately I left the instrument design in the hands of Vinny and Joey.
