Fodera Club Part XIV

. . . Ron Carter's rhythmic approach on the head. I love the ways his 2 feel line fits the melody seamlessly and think you might get something out of it as well. Also some classic Ron Carter triplets in the solos.

no fodera content follows:

ron c is a master of the two feel, plus a whole lot more. i really got into the miles in tokyo disc, which is a primer on jazz bass playing/feels, etc. his playing on that is crazy. super nimble and has a dancing feel. (yeah, i sound fanboi, but he ain't my supafave jazz guy)

kind of essential (along with lugged nickel complete)

imho, etc.

(and yeah, todd, that stuff sounds good)

After the first proper gig with the MGS, it has gotten a thumbs up all around. I'm still figuring out where all the damn notes are on the bass, but not as much mental confusion as I feared (well, beyond the normal levels). Drummer commented that he like the tone on this one better than any of my other basses. It really is effortless to play.

A track from today. Far from perfect but gives you an idea of the tone in a mix. Neck pup in dual coil mode, running through the Tecamp Puma 500 into a single XS112 cab.

That is some very nice jazz. And what was that harmonic hat trick at 7:30?

Thanks for the various props. No harmonic there (though may be inadvertent). I'm playing a m2 interval (I think it is C on the C string and B on the G string) and then move a few notes down chromatically on the G string. Since I've been working on modes with Ant and switched to 4-fingers/4-frets I've come to like the m2 setting up motion. And 33" scale makes those intervals even easier to play.

I'll need to check more of that out. I'm actually working on 2-feel in one of the bands I play in as I usually default to quarter note swing. Friday night's gig will be an experiment into more open feels. I told the keyboard player to be careful what he asks for though...

You're studying with Anthony Wellington online? How's that going?

Is it a requirement that your teachers play Foderas? ;)

I'm studying with Patitucci online myself on URB, and it's fantastic.

Yeah, I do skype lessons with him. Been on a mini hiatus as he's been on tour with Victor. I met him at camp last year and started around the first of the year. He's a great teacher and has very methodical ways of approaching the instrument. Which is good for me as I'm largely self-taught on bass so I have an odd mix of "technique" cobbled together between fingerstyle guitar, piano, banjo, and a handful or URB lessons. I basically started over at age 50.

seriously, dude, miles in tokyo.

miles, tony, herbie, ron . . . and sam rivers. it's like a freaking textbook of jazz bass feels and fluidity.

Absolutely our pleasure!

Still loving my Emperor 5. This bass makes me feel more like a musician than any other I have played. By that I mean that I don't really think about the instrument at all when playing. I think about what I want to do sometime, and then it just magically winds up being executed in a nearly effortless manner. It is nice and refreshing to notice a variable that triggers growth as an artist without actively seeking it through lessons or excessive shedding. Thanks again to the Fodera team!

We went back and forth a hundred times about what bridge to put on the MGS. In the end, we ended up with a 17.5mm version of our "Standard" bridge rather than the Custom Shop one...but for different reasons than you may think.

The shop that we use for the Custom Shop bridges is a very small volume supplier and they seem to have consistent trouble with both delivery timing and black plating. Since on the MGS we need to buy 30+ at a clip, we chose to go with the Standard bridge as the shop that makes them for us is used to dealing in higher volumes and hitting delivery deadlines.

Of course this was AFTER we listened to our MGS2 (the shop's demo MGS) blindly with BOTH bridges and concluded that they are sonically indistinguishable from one another. From a functional standpoint they are also equals. I will tell you right now that if I bought an MGS, there is NO WAY that I would change bridges...

J

A little, but I'll pull through. Sometimes the anticipation is of value too (not to suggest I want more though).

One question, and I'm sure this has been asked before: Is the standard bridge in any way inferior to the custom bridge? One of the things I really like about my imperial 34 buckeye is the bridge ( it is the nicest bridge Ive ever used and It allowed customization of my spacing) and just hoping that there is no inferior aspect there. I assumed it was the custom bridge on the MGS because it looked like it was on Matt's original MGS. Just curious. If there is any compromise you know what the next question is going to be...LOL.

BTW: your participation / communication here is really appreciated. It's the kind of representation such fine instruments needed.

Yes. The price is on the pricelist

Oh wait, I see it now. Is that what they're calling a 'semi-hollow body?' The charge isn't so bad, actually. Did you opt for a chambered body for weight considerations?

2 feels are so much more fun and expressive in the long run, IMHO.

Okay, I'm an ignoramus when it comes to jazz. Is the 2 feel when two of the notes in 4/4 are half notes? If I'm off the mark completely, does anyone know of a good online resource I can use to learn more about this stuff? I find that a lot happens in Jazz that some other styles just never feature.

Yes! Since the Emperor has bigger body than the MG model. Still it is around 10 pounds but it is not heavy and we are taking a walnut body. The weight is little more than my Emperor 4. If could back in time. The bass should a been a MG and 33 scale and be 100 % perfect for me! Now it's 95 % :)
