sure. but, imho, whatever you do is going to change the sound of a bass, and for me that's a component of the "tone."


from my experience, that could be pick guard vs. no pick guard, thickness of finish, dual truss rod vs. single truss rod, etc. hell, i'm pretty much convinced that my basses sound different acoustically without a preamp in them (empty cavity with small resonant chamber)—i know they can do feedback a little easier.

it might be subtle, but i think it's there.

I can tell you a bit about Fodera bridge spacing. They have 3 bridges, one for 19mm, one for 17.5mm, both of which are custom made Fodera bridges, (though the ones they use on 'standards' are slightly different than the ones on the custom instruments). They also use a different bridge for 16.5mm, but it is a stock Hipshot bridge (I think it's Hipshot). I was considering a 16.5mm spacing on my new bass, but I wanted a Fodera bridge, plus, 16.5 seems a bit small even for my tiny hands. The Fodera bridges do have some amount of adjustability to them, such that, I think, the 17.5mm can get down to 16.8mm, if I recall correctly, but you should really get the 'right' bridge for your style of play. Just my $0.02.

Having seen the bass in person, it looks far more like the Newborn photo than the cell phone photo! The top is clearly Rosewood in person -- NOT Walnut looking at all. Looks aside, the bass kills from a tone a playability standpoint. It was very difficult for us to pack her up and ship her off!!

Our 19.0mm bridges can adjust from roughly 18.70mm - 20.0mm.

Our 17.5mm bridges can adjust from roughly 17.25 - 17.75mm.

We do use stock Hipshot bridges for our 16.5mm spacing.

The necks of each instrument are shaped and sized completely differently depending on what the string spacing is, so, you really need to choose the correct bridge from the outset. Because, as you can see above, there is some adjustability, but it's not huge...

Thank you that is great to know. Just trying to find right moment to call Dave at Ultimate Basses. This has to be a "stealth" purchase. Meaning.....my wife catches me buying another bass and I am a dead man!

I'm heading over to Ultimate Basses for the first time today and my wife will be with me. I am starting small with a couple of Fodera t-shirts but maybe I can talk the wife into another Fodera for next year.;) Tough task as my 2nd Fodera is still approx 9-10 months away.:help:

Please note that they are both the same shape -- some of the early Newborns on the site look slightly "squashed."

Other than my 1984 all original Monarch, the one I am thinking of parting with gets the least playing time in the flock. NOT because it is not extraordinary, but rather because I personally favor Duncans to EMG's.

Obviously the new Monarch with the Pink Ivory FB is pretty darned special if I am thinking of buying it from one of our Dealers! I promised Dave a decision by Monday...

Your thoughts?

Oh, and hopefully it's comforting to know that one of the owners of the Company is every bit as passionate and, perhaps a bit nutty (in a good way!), as every one else that regularly checks in here?

If I didn't have a bass coming real, real soon, (although I haven't gotten a picture yet), I would buy that today. It's got everything, a little like my olive Emp, which they will pry from my cold dead hands. If that doesn't sell in a day I would be surprised.

Wow, Jason, this is a pretty wild post! So, you're saying that you are considering the purchase of one of your own basses from a dealer? If I may ask, why didn't you just take it before it left the shop, and simply pay the dealer what his profit is/was going to be? Was it that you hadn't thought about it enough before it went out the door, or was it something else? Just curious.

By the way, I love the pink ivory board. I think the 6 string Emperor II at Bass Club Chicago, with the pink ivory board, is just amazing, so I'd be partial to that new one!

Fortunately for Jason, this bass has yet to leave the Fodera shop. It's one of the 'Twins' we designed. If Jason decides to keep this one, I won't get to see it until my next visit to the shop. However, in the next 2-3 weeks, the other twin will surface. It's an Imperial 5 with the same specs. Good thing Jason isn't a 5 string guy. :D

I think the wood specs for the Buckeye/Pink Ivory bass make for a really great bass, which is what I was looking for in my next build "A Rock&Roll tone monster."

I'm in the US at the moment to clear up some business and as much as I would have loved to have brought one of my Fodera' with me "Virgin Airways" aka Mr Branson's policy regarding guitars on board i.e not in the overhead locker just suck..:crying:
So, as I mentioned to Dave (The Ultimate Bloodhound) the next bass is going to be a bolt-on for sure, just so I can detach and go. So question; Does Tom Kennedy use any special neck bolt arrangement on his TK EmpII or the new E5S to facilitate this process???
