I meant, does it perhaps add more low end, or curb the mids a bit, in the effort to make it lighter and resonant? When I say more resonant, I mean it becomes louder or rings out better. Doesn't necessarily mean the timbre of the wood combos would change....or maybe they would! haha that's why I asked!
sure. but, imho, whatever you do is going to change the sound of a bass, and for me that's a component of the "tone."
from my experience, that could be pick guard vs. no pick guard, thickness of finish, dual truss rod vs. single truss rod, etc. hell, i'm pretty much convinced that my basses sound different acoustically without a preamp in them (empty cavity with small resonant chamber)i know they can do feedback a little easier.
it might be subtle, but i think it's there.
