LOL, I will try to post a photo of the top on Tuesday. There is only enough left of it for one more instrument. Not sure that it will fit an EII...I will check.

Yes, no question there is a difference. The true single coils sound a bit more open with a touch more presence and "air." Hard to describe, but unmistakeable if you hear them side by side. Keep in mind, what you lose in absolute tone in single coil mode, you gain in not having to deal with 60-cycle hum when you solo one of the PUP's. That said, Joey, Vinny and I have yet to hear any kind of "noiseless" or humbucking PUP that sounds like a great set of single coils...I am just not sure that it is mechanically / physical possible...

This is a constant topic with the Sadowsky guys. As far as I can tell, a single coil is a single coil and any trickery you perform to hum cancel is going to affect the tone. No hiding from physics.

I've warmed to the dual coils, and they are versatile. I've also gotten over my "no JJ" bias, but if I only could have one pickup it would be a P.

Here's a Fodera factory visit that might interest some of you. At about 02:00 there are a couple of single coil 5 string Emperors the guy tries out, followed later in the video with a tryout of his new dual coil Imperial.

Given that there are variable in strings and woods, it still seems to me that the single coil basses have that 'air' you guys were talking about, and a kind of more 'bouncy' quality to the sound for want of a better word.

Still, the dual coil pickup in single coil mode still sounds pretty good.

Unfortunately the video is in Russian so although it's long it's not going to be that interesting for most of you.

wish i understood russian! interested in whats being said when theyre looking at the removable truss rod.

Sort of...traditional hum bucker construction can change the tone for a variety of reasons, like additional inductance or more pole pieces but an active hum bucker meaning that a hum pickup coil is summed in actively can have very little tone impact if it isn't string driven. Alembic has done some of this I believe.

Honestly though the two configurations I've used single coils have been bridge and neck together for killer slap tone which bucks and bridge soloed with all the highs rolled off (Jaco). Scs have never been a problem for me, but I've had horrible hum from bass pickup shielding issues, especially with light dimmers in the area.

I couldn't ever give up my Duncan hum bucker sound though. The clanky tone I get with the bridge soloed seriously cuts.
