Wow welcome to Ash/Br rosewood family. I am very satisfied that combo.
Could you share what make you choose single coil pu for the bass over dual coil?
I am thinking of that for my next one too.

So, yesterday Joey and I were playing Monarch Standard #2 and we both loved the tone so much that it tipped me decisively into the Ash body column for my upcoming build. Yes, Brazilian is subtly different than Pau Ferro, but the overall theme of Ash with a warming influence on the FB really sounds fantastic to me, so, final specs are...

Ash Body / Chestnut Tone Block
5-piece Maple Neck
Brazilian FB
Crotch Walnut Top (non-solid)
J/J Single coils in Walnut Covers

Hardware color will be selected once the bass is built.

As I sit here in my executive meeting, slipping in and out of conscienceousness...on tap..Marketing/advertising...then an idea came up for you...as this coming year is Fodera's 30th anniversary!!...What about ...get Carlo's Bakery in NJ (Buddy from the TV show Cake Boss) to make you a functional Fodera Bass Cake??...then work the whole TV angle??...sorry ..just brain storming?...got to get back to meeting..LOL

Ha! My company had Buddy make us a cake last year. Great exposure for both companies.... And just across the river for Fodera!

It's all a question of personal taste. I am a bit of a bass omnivore in that I have a lot of different tone wood combinations and pickup configurations, but if I had to choose just one it would be a good set of single coils. The purity of the tone, the cut and the bark just really sound like nothing else. Yes, dual coils are a lot more flexible, but single coils just sound flat out amazing (as long as you don't mind a little 60-cycle hum if you are soloing one of the PUP's).

since Holly is the top wood on my upcoming custom 5 string I found this nice historical background of this wood :

So my Bass will be able to keep away bad grooves from drummers ? LOL

Hey Jason,

Something I've always thought would be valuable would be to include the control layout for the YYD/Monarch with the EMG P/J pickups (which, I guess, is just the Monarch layout, minus the Coil Tap Switch), but might be of value because they are reasonably plentiful. Just a thought, kind sir!

I'm excited to see how your bass will look when completed - you don't see a lot of single coils in wooden covers!

No pics, this was over 15 years ago. I don't even have the VHS tapes anymore ! I'd love to see it but I doubt even Fodera has pics of it. Beautiful bass though, and it sounded great in Uncle Will's hands.

This isn't the one I'm talking about, but it is another Fodera Will owned. I've seen him in NYC with another one too, but I forget the specs.

played that bass back then. I remember when it was built plus the guys did some work on some of will's fender basses. IIRC he had a almost pinkish to black SB jazz.

Jason - Any chance you can post pictures of the top wood you are considering? Who knows, depending upon what it looks like...I might consider taking the leftovers for an Emperor II with that super mahogany for body wings and an ash tone block...

Deluxes run about twice that. Used. I don't really follow the deluxe 4 market but cheapest I've seen was in the $6s I think.

You could get a new standard monarch (bolt on 4) for high 4's, or there's a bolt on monarch that has no top that has been on ebay for some time for about $4250. Or a ying yang standard might pop up used for $4500 or so.

My vote would be the standard monarch.

yup, not gonna happen. You could find one around $6K if you hunt, but below that will be a long wait and/or never.
