Fodera Club Part XVIII

Speaking of working with our Japanese, distributor (Ven Corp.), this was something that they wanted to try. As you all know we are definitely NOT set up to do color work in Brooklyn (for a number of reasons). However, we have worked with a wonderful paint shop in Japan in the past (they did the spraying on the NYC's) and so the colored E5S is something that is being tried for the Japanese market. We deliver the instruments to them with the initial clear coats and then they have color sprayed in Japan. We have done this on 4 or 5 Standards so far...

There is a real possibility that we will offer some limited color work in the next year or two, but nothing definitive at this time. As always, we'd be interested in your thoughts!

It's the same kind of paint and painting process that we use here in Brooklyn and they are as fanatical about NOT using too much finish as we are, so although I have not heard the E5S since it was sprayed, the folks at Ven Corp. know Foderas as well as anyone outside of the shop in Brooklyn and they would not tolerate diminished tone. They have also spent countless hours at the shop in Brooklyn and are as well versed in final set-up as we are...

Yesterday I took delivery of a Matt Garrison standard the first thing I had to remember that it was a "standard". If I had three thumbs they would all be "thumbs up" (plus my playing would be interesting) for another amazing instrument from the people at Fodera. I was reminded why I defend, sometimes rabidly, the pricing structure of a Fodera within this forum.

Jason,

With respect to colors on Foderas. Since you're looking for opinions, I'll give you mine. I wouldn't do colors on your basses. Of course, one might say that a true custom shop such as yours should, perhaps, offer any/all kinds of options, colors included. That said, I think Fodera is already at the pinnacle of the bass quality pyramid, and you've built your reputation on the finest quality tone woods and stellar exotic wood tops.

I'd let the Fenders and others who build Fender clones (of which there are many, many) do the painted finishes.

Just my $0.02.

Oh, just one more thing I DO know... If you end up offering colors as an option, there will not be a higher quality painted bass than one coming from Fodera :D

A little on the heavy side with lots of mids. It is beautiful and if the tone is right for you its a fun option. Sadly, it's gotten expensive and so it is an upcharge when used as either a top or body...

i know i'm not a member, nor do i own a fodera, but regarding doing colors.
i think going the route of stains/dyes would be cool and would probably help keep with the tradition of a thin finish. but again, i'm no expert on finishing and this is just my opinion. if i had the money to go the custom route, it would be fodera. also i think a monarch 4 with a trans red satin finish over ash with black hardware and an ebony f/b would be awesome.
