With my crazy work schedule and being a very involved Dad / Husband, my heavy gigging days are long over (at least for now). I try to get out at least twice a month to keep myself honest and involved, but I no longer am gigging for much more than beer money, so "marketing" myself hasn't been necessary. I honestly cannot say that I miss that!!

Thats cool I can relate, I'm very uncomfortable with it, it feels way too narcissistic.

These days I'm figuring out if you want to meet new potentials, a video showing you playing really helps to get them comfortable ( or uncomfortable ). I think it demonstrates a lot and as someone who's primarily interested in original stuff it's a great tool to weed out potential collaborators by showing them, "hey this is how I play" and "Im not a crack addict" (And Much preferable to actually showing up at a crack addict's place). They can choose to call you or not, but either way its favorable to the deer in the headlights look you get when you have to do it one on one and they either don't dig or get your stuff. Major time saver...and just another dimension beyond audio IMHO. The best has always been friends recommendations however...

I read up on Mr Floride..what a bummer... I can't afford to lose my "Precious." I have a pretty good flight case with TSO locks but I had a bad experience returning to the UK from NY last February. On collecting my suitcase (with TSO locks) from the carousel I found my case had been prized open with a screwdriver, I thought the addition of TSO locks was supposed to allow access by the authorities, preventing the need to bust up luggage..Wrong!

I spoke to a customer rep for the airline and they assure me that luggage marked "Fragile" will be handled with care..haha!!
Don't know what to think...

Buy a TSA certified flight case, pack her extra gingerly, DO NOT MARK IT Fragile! That is a sure sign to get it abused. Insure it. It will be much cheaper. I usually pack all the clothes I can in the carry on and pack the bass. I have status on certain airlines, so the guitar flies free as first bag.

Tough call, as it is usually a crap shoot, although I have only had one instrument issue in 30 years. Klaus Floride, however, is still looking for his legendaery J Bass in some South American airline baggage claim.

If I go with airplane, I always carry bass with me to the plane, in a gig bag.

Did that many times, now last time I did it was in 2012, no idea if rules have changed?

btw, you can always ship it with FedEx or something if you are scared of planes, but that cost a lot...

+1 been carrying it on with me for 3-4 years now. Had a couple scary moments but I've never lost a bass or had one destroyed. (yet....knocking on basses....) United is great with bringing them on, but if you check it and it gets destroyed or stolen they take absolutely 0 responsibility. My band always flies United and my singer ALWAYS checks his acoustic guitar in a hard case with fragile stickers all over it and it was recently lost, then found, but arrived destroyed. He received $0.

yes. I often take my IGiG single bag, but I find the bigger your bass bag, the more likely you're gonna have an issue with the gate people trying to get it on the plane. They'll try and convince you forever that it won't fit in the overhead regardless of how many times you've done it, because you know it fits with room to spare. Either way, I've recently been flying with my harvest leather bag which is much smaller and I never have an issue now.

I bought a RB Continental specifically to fly with. It is fairly compact but is tough enough that the bass would have a fighting chance if they had to gate check it.

I've been considering the check-in vs carry-on issue lately. For the last 15 years or so I have been checking my basses in a soft gig bag inside a SKB Roto Bass Case shell ( formerly SKB Bass Safe). I have never had an issue with this except that I usually have to pay $20 - $100 for an extra bag. Since I have usually been staying where ever I am for at least a month, the money is not a huge issue, and it's really nice to just check the bass and not have to carry it through the airport!
This becomes expensive if you are just flying to play a one or two nighter. It seems to me that, as touring is becoming more expensive there are a lot more fly-in gigs. I'm seeing a lot more players carrying their instruments on in hybrid bags. I just flew round trip from Mexico to Austin TX. The first two flights were on smaller planes with very small overhead compartments and everything over a small backpack had to be gate checked.
I'm curious to know
1 If any more of you are carrying your basses on.
2. If so, what bags are you using?
3. Do you have any problem if you have to gate-check it?

This is the issue that I feel makes a headless bass design all the more important. I don't have one myself now, but I will be getting one in the future for times when I need to fly. I've been lucky with flying with my bass in the past (with a Mouradian gig bag, bringing it on the plane), but I'd feel better knowing I'm walking on with a shorter instrument that will fit in any overhead.

I've flown with an incase bass case both gate checked and had it in the overhead to Europe and all over with no problems. Soft enough to work as a gig bag but strong enough to gate check. Don't know if they still make it but I've seen them on eBay. Also has a useful laptop compartment.

I've done it a few times. It's usually pretty fun.

My last trip with a bass was to go from EU to Asia with a Dingwall Z3.

I called the company before leaving and had a no way answer to bring the bass in a bag with me. (or had to buy an extra seat for the bass !)

I found a cheap solution but very usefull and safe to get the bass checked in :

I took the original carton box bass and re-pack the bass as I received it.
I opened the box in top just to let the handel accecible.
The carton is light weight, so no adding cost.

The only point is you can't check in more than one bag or guitare, so you have to deal with your own personal things in a small bag than you can bring with you.

Long time ago (in my 20 years), I use to travel a lot with an acoustic Ovation bass, in a single hard shell.
After many trip (UE, Asia, OZ and Tahiti), I get the bass damaged (the join between the top wood and the body broke).
But it was the extremly temperature changement who did it.
(when the plane flying, the luggage compartment of the plane turn very cold)

I use iGig, but it's really big bag for carry it on the plane,
this one I think is much smaller

also there is a guy here in croatia that makes custom cases for instruments out of carbon and kevlar... my frien has it and it's pretty cool, small and light for hard case....
