I have a question for those of you with more experience than I have. I've had my Monarch, a new build, for about three months and I love the tone and the feel. I'm told that the wood is basically settling in (my words) for the first year or so. Do you guys find that there is a noticeable change in tone after playing the bass for a year or so? Or, do you find any other changes over time as the bass settles? Interested in hearing other's experiences. Thanks

Yup... Ebony.

I have historically preferred the perfectly black ebony boards, but I dunno.... This one looks killer IMO with the light figuring. Can't wait to see the entire bass finished!

Thanks, man! Next time you are in Toronto, if I'm playing or not, beers on me. :)

Not sure what I am doing yet but leaning towards walnut (or maybe ash) body and maple (or maybe ash) neck IF I go fretted. Definitely maple board if I go fretted. I really need to hear how articulate/warm and just the general tonal capabilities of my mahogany/ebony build. In any case, if I go with a second fretted custom, I will want it to sound and look very different. Still need to figure out what to do I with my E5S too. It is one amazing bass and I have enjoyed every second I have played it over the last year. Very unlikely I can afford (or be allowed) to keep all 3!

Historically, me too, but that's just because it's what I've been used to... I've been around a while. :) That said, I had a bass built by another luthier a while back that had what was called "blistered ebony", which also had some light figuring in it, and it really looked awesome.

You know the whole back story about why figured ebony is going to be more and more the norm, right? If not, check out this link, and definitely watch the vid by Bob Taylor... it's really interesting...

That is a cool video. Ive had both the jet black ebony and the with streaking / figuring. I really like them both. My build last year had a fb with nice streaking / figuring. I like it, it adds sort of an exotic interest. It looks great with abalone too ( or blank ).

I also asked, but I suspect it is actually Gaboon/Cameroon. With the whole ebony thing going on, we're going to see a lot more of that kind of ebony with similar figuring as Mac.

Very cool video. I really like the look of figured ebony. I remember the blistered ebony board you had on that other bass...it was AMAZING. Almost looked like you were seeing a pic of the universe with that "blisters" looking like stars or planets...

i tend to be an outlier on these things.

some basses have taken 5 years for me to really understand their strengths and to really make them "my own."

i'm willing to invest the time while others will not.
