Hi Julian

Mine´s gonna be a bolt-on 35-scale with 24 frets and ash body with koa top and rw board. SD DC and mid-switch instead of on/off.
Bridge pu in 70´s pos and neck pu in TK pos. I think it will come out rather punchy:hyper:.

Sounds very good - I like the Dual Coils a lot - they sound phat and punchy but the last time I'm totaly in love with the Singlecoil mode - it's nice to have both options - you have so many sounds in that basses ... unbelievable :o

@ Hou

Doesn't look that purple Board fantastic :hiding: - I love the contrast :D

Fodera Anthony Jackson 5 string. Chambered body, Cedar top, Seymour Duncan magnetic & RMC ( Richard McLish) piezo P/U's, 35" scale, Mike Pope preamp, ebony fingerboard, weight 8.25 lbs. Serial Number J531593N.fod3.jpgfodback.jpg
Does anyone have any information about this bass? I bought it used from a private seller April 2006. I am not certain about the body woods. I have never seen another AJ 5 string. The seller described it as such and I know no other way to describe it. I am guessing that perhaps the serial number stands for Jackson - 5 string - 5.31.1993. Does anyone know how Fodera works their serial numbers? I have tried contacting Fodera but they are very busy and I don't want to pester them. They did however, send me a complete set of pickup screws when I needed them, so I guess they have their priorities right! Any information appreciated! http://www.steveyork.com/fodera.htm http://www.steveyork.com

Hi Steve,

Great rare bass you have there! Some modifications to the bass over the years...the pickup and preamp have been changed. I bet it sounds killer.

This bass was custom made for bassist Ed Lucie. I was able to play this bass about 3 years ago and it originally had a Bartolini pickup with a different preamp on it. This bass has an identical twin, a 34" version, which is still with Ed. These are the only basses made with Western red cedar chambered body and top.

I am not sure how to read Fodera serial numbers, just call them and they can look it up for you. Send me an email at [email protected], I can give you Ed's email so you can contact him directly and get the full details about his old bass.

Miko

Wow, that was a fast response - and more info than I could have hoped for! I did talk to Joey not long after I bought the bass and at first he identified it as Ed's, but then said he wasn't sure. Perhaps the changed electronics threw him.
The seller told me that Mike Pope had this bass in his possession for a few weeks and had worked on the preamp so your info makes sense.
I really love this bass. I had pared my collection down to two Lakland 55-94's and a Rob Allen MB2 and a Deep 5. I had called Fodera with pretty much exactly this bass in mind as it seemed to me combine the features of the Laklands & the RA's that I liked. I was quoted $9000 and the usual long wait and put the idea on ice. About a month later I saw this on ebay and , after 3 days of option anxiety & GAS, I closed my eyes and hit the buy-it-now button. I'm very happy with it - it just keeps getting better. You've really made my day with this info! Thanks Miko!

Thanks Julian. I little more info. I did email Ed Lucie. He had the bass made in the early 90's. It was originally made as a 5 string tuned E to high C with a D-tuner. It also had narrower string spacing to facilitate pick playing. He told me he had it built for a specific sound but it was not what he was looking for. He sold it in LA early 2006. I bought it from a bassist/collector in Boston in April 2006 and it had already been converted to a standard 5 string. As far as I can accurately measure, the string spacing is 17mm.
The original Bartolini p/u was changed to a Seymour Duncan. The seller told me that the bass had recently been in the hands of Mike Pope for tweaking.
It would appear that someone bought it from Ed and had it converted for easier resale.
Thanks again to Miko for helping me obtain this info and to Ed for graciously answering my questions.

Just got a Fodera Emperor Deluxe. Nice bass! Initially, I was a little disappointed in the tone, but after having the preamp re-installed by Mike Pope, the thing plays beautifully.

I really get the Fodera thing now--the tone has a purity to it that is really compelling. Just pure, deep, unadorned bass. I can see why somebody would stop playing all their other basses once they have one of these. About a year ago, I had a Monarch New Standard 4 w/EMG PJs, and that really didn't do it for me for some reason, but this Emperor really sings! It's making me reconsider the need for my BN5, which is a pretty remarkable (and beautiful) bass itself.
