Fodera Quality that doesn't $$$ Fodera Price!

I own a fodera and the thing plays like a dream but I got it used and it is ten years old so I wasn't dealing with current pricing. But I had an MTD a while back and I will attest the build quality was right on par with the fodera. The tones are worlds apart. My fodera is more Hi-fi, and the MTD was a more earthy organic sound, highlights the acoustics of the wood in the bass. But both are top notch instruments. Down the line I would not hesitate to order an MTD more to my specs to zero in on my sound a little more.

vintage and custom shop basses are a way different animal than something like a fodera,smith,lawrence, etc. i wont get into the merits of a ben lindsey bass, but if youre looking for a fodera type bass, something from lindsey,nash,atkinson,john kallas or whoever is about as far away as you could get.

Wow you have alot of great builders to choose from and someone before at this thread already mention him is you should also check out RBass club thread. IMHO this is the closest your going to get build wise without having to fork up 12k no disrespect to the guys at Fodera. Ray is a great guy to work with check out his work it's amazing!. Sound wise his basses won't sound like a fodera but atleast you'll come close to what ur looking for at very reasonable prices with many diffrent pickup and pre options.

you may well get very close with a pope pre though.


But...as said before; if it is a fodera you want, you will most likely have one at some point.
Built quality or wood quality is not the problem here-many have that but few talk about it as much as fodera do I recon.

I would just try instruments by many builders and see what suits best.

Lots of good suggestions here.

Personal experience with Roscoe, older Tobias 5 (an '89), older Ken Smith 5 (an '85 or '86 which was as dense as, and weighed as much as depleted uranium, but gawd, what a sound!), Sadowsky 4 (a '90), USA Peavey Cirrus 5 (still own; forget the year), Rob Allen MB-2 fretless (still own). All fantastic instruments, many art-like. And yet, I still go back to my old '75 Jazz with pearl blocks on a regular basis. Why? Well, why is the '57 Chevy, the '69 Camaro, the '65 Mustang, or the MGB at the center of gravity for so many car geeks? They're just right, they're modular, they're tweakable.

Yeah, their finishes aren't up to par but their basses play like butter, much like Foderas do. I actually played a really nice Fodera Emperor 6 string and lusted after that for years. I just didn't have the money for it. Then I saw a USA Cirrus 6'er on Ebay and got it for $799 BRAND NEW! After I got it and played it, I never lusted after that Fodera again. My Cirrus is legit!

Good point a flex core pre might be an good option. And ur right try every bass.
