Ditto for me to...I just got a 5 pack of Fodera Nickel 5 string sets in the same gauge in the last couple of weeks for my Lakland and in anticipation of my soon to be added ES5 #86 which is currently on hold for me at Bass Central. I have a gig for 2 days in Panama City, FL in a couple of weeks and will make the pilgrimage over to Fern Park to the Bass Candy store that is Bass Central and play the ones they have in stock. I asked Mike to play the ones he had and pick the best feeling and sounding one and hold it and that is the one he chose.

For what it's worth I have been playing Sadowsky nickels for a number of years now and love those as well but there is something about the Fodera nickels that I really dig even when they are "dead". I put a set on my Lakland yesterday (Saturday) in anticipation of this gig and gave her a really good setup and she has a totally different feel and voice. In fact I just got home from a gig up in Cary, NC and used the Lakland 55-02 I have because I needed the flexibility and the 5 strings (or I would have taken my YYS #49!!). Even though these guys have heard this bass numerous times (I just played her with the same band last Friday but with the Sadowskys), I got compliments from the keyboardist, trombone player, guitarist, and the lead singer. All of them said the bass sounded great! Same bass different strings!

To be fair, everything was exactly the same in my setup except for the string change. I use a POD HD500 into an Avalon U5 or a Universal Audio 6176 depending on my mood. (I only use the Fender Bassman and B-15 on the POD but I use some of the effects) and I monitor through a QSC K12 on stage. We always have a great PA and a crew so I only need to monitor myself onstage. Our sound guy is fabulous and I typically hear myself so well in the PA that I could probably do away with the stage wedge but old habits...These guys are all pros and we work primarily from Florida to Delaware doing about 230 or so dates a year so they get plenty of opportunity to hear my gear. YES it is a grind sometimes but there is nothing like playing in a popular regional act with a talented bunch of guys who have all been doing it for 30 plus years. None of them get excited about much of anything gear wise as we work too much to really do a lot of experimenting. All are on ears except the guitarist, keyboardist, and myself. Immediately after the last song the lead singer and owner of the band said "Wow your bass really sounded great." He had never done that before....Pretty much says it all as far as I am concerned....I use the Fodera Nickel 40-60-80-100-120 and use the same gauge on my YYS. I can't recommend them highly enough! Try a set and I think you would be hooked...

Just put 45-105 nickels on mine. seems about right. Loved the slinky feeling of the 40-95 but the g string was just too thin. been usng 45 for about 25 years..

I have tried the .045-.100 (.125 B) Fodera nickel and steels as well as the .040-120 nickel and steels.... My favorites are the light .040-.120 steels. I just love the feel and the tone is great. They also last a long time. I bought a 10 pack in March from the Fodera shop and I still have 7 packs left which is amazing to me as I play my E5S a ton and love new strings. I get a good 6-8 weeks out of the the Fodera steels.

I prefer Fodera to any other strings I have played (EBMM, Roto, GHS, DR, etc.), but Sadowsky strings are a close second IME. If I couldn't get Foderas, Sadowskys would be my next choice.

i knew Todd would chime in. His is a deluxe but he may be the biggest YY fan in the world after Victor. And his gateway was a YYS....


truth be told I am a huge Fodera with p bass guy.

one with each generation of fodera preamp. Many times I wind up passive except the middle one because in passive the tone control doesn't work on that particualr hazlab preamp.

I just haven't found another bass to topple it off the top of the heap. I've had nearly every example of incredible bass go through my hands and still my YYD is the one I tend to grab. I've almost gotten to the point where I've thought about just buying another YY and getting rid of everything else. It is the sound I hear in my head, and the playability never gets in my way.

thats what i thought. I added the 2 knob mid to MS #57 and i like what it adds to the std preamp. I may just go with the custom as the layout is closer to what is in the bass. nice aged 87 vintage emg's in it. walnut body, spaulted sycamore top, maple/ebony neck. Have to get to the shop next month to put some DC's in the five string so I will have to talk to J&J about it. Plus ther eis the possibility of a passive p......

All good things, I'm going crazy waitin on my YYS to arrive in October. I think I have exhausted any and all material relating to it on the web - so I wanted some fresh input. Any and all impressions/thoughts are welcome!
