Fodera Yin-Yang Standard Wait Support Group

That's what you get for GASsing those cheapos! Who cares for those budget wannabies! Ha! I followed the link to the building process pics and that's what I got (roughly translated): "the scenario on this page has problems with execution. Do you want to continue (Y/N)?". I pressed "Continue" and my computer was paralyzed, no programs were working, including the task manager. I had to unplug it to reset.
What did I expect for the humble $4750? Ha!

Seriously, guys, have your techs take a look at the page.

P.S. I want one. Maybe someday.

I will measure a few more and report back if I get anything different than 1.5". As they are handmade, there could be some variation, but I have yet to play one (of the first 7 - including the two prototypes) that felt like 1 5/8. Where are you getting this conflicting information?

J

Can you confirm they are 1.5"? I seem to get conflicting information - have heard both 1-5/8" and 1-1/2" at the nut.

I played victor's real bass and his YING YANG standard..

Honestly his real bass was amazing.. the ying yang standard not so much... Its just a really cheap version of his bass..... The knob came right off when i was playing it and i had to tell victor about he but his reply "oh yeah that always happens"... lol

Victors bass was amazing the standard was a bit dissapointing considering it still cost quite a bit

This is actually the very first bit of feedback that we have received of this kind about the Yin Yang Standard (including asking some very wonderful, top pros to put these through their paces). I am very sorry that this was your experience. This is certainly not my personal experience, nor do I believe that Victor himself would agree...based on multiple conversations we have had about the Standard.

I personally own and routinely play both a Standard and a Deluxe and, other than the fact that one is a Dovetail Neck and one is a Bolt-on, they play and sound incredibly similarly. Perhaps Vic's Standard was not properly set-up and the Deluxe was at the time that you played them?

In terms of calling the instrument a "really cheap version," please elaborate on what made it seem that way to you as we tend to be a very, very critical lot here at Fodera and that has not been our reaction at all. The knobs used are exactly the same ones that we use on our custom instruments and the Preamp they are attached to is anything BUT cheap...it is a full-blown Mike Pope design that costs more than some basses do.

Again, it would be most helpful if you could elaborate on specifically what made the bass seem "cheap." Feel free to email me directly and or call me at the shop anytime if you would rather discuss it in person. Thanks for the feedback...I am most interest in learning more from you.

Regards,

Jason

Loose set screw on the knob?

I would love to read side-by-side comparisons of the YYS against other Fodera Monarchs. When I get mine it'll be my first Fodera and my first "expensive bass" (cf sig), so I'll be able to judge it in its own right but not have much to compare it to.

A knob came off? So a set screw came loose. I hardly think that's a quality issue. Also, the Standard costs half as much as the custom, so they're not going to have the level of detail you're paying the other $5,000 for.

The one I played yesterday at Bass San Diego definitely has the vibe of a full-on custom. Yes, there are some construction differences, but that's the point ... they want to hit a price point that enables more players to own a Fodera. Tone-wise, the custom EMGs and Pope preamp are the heart of the bass and, if you're looking for the Fodera sound, they deliver.

If you stand three feet away from the Standard, you're going to have a hard time visually differentiating it from a custom. You probably won't be able to tell the difference sonically at any distance. If you want Victor Wooten's bass, you'll have to pay the freight. If you want a bass that performs at the same level at half the price, the Standard does that.

A knob coming off would actually be more likely a reflection on the knob manufacturer that Fodera. Depending on which one it was, they have bought from many hundreds to thousands of them over the last 15 years or so with an excellent track record in terms of failures. Fodera makes every effort to use top notch components, but not everything can be perfect. And in their defense, a certain very popular signature artist has a tendancy to be rather hard on his basses sometimes :) A knob might well find itself in harm's way once in a while.

As for the preamp, just for the record, the control pots used in the Fodera Standard Preamp found in the YYS (and all of the other permutations of the MPD FlexCore preamps) are the same ones found in the Fodera Custom Preamp. Although the circuit itself differs, the pots come out of the same bin for both preamps. They're really good parts. I've been through thousands and thousands of them over the years and they are highly reliable.
