A knob came off? So a set screw came loose. I hardly think that's a quality issue. Also, the Standard costs half as much as the custom, so they're not going to have the level of detail you're paying the other $5,000 for.
The one I played yesterday at Bass San Diego definitely has the vibe of a full-on custom. Yes, there are some construction differences, but that's the point ... they want to hit a price point that enables more players to own a Fodera. Tone-wise, the custom EMGs and Pope preamp are the heart of the bass and, if you're looking for the Fodera sound, they deliver.
If you stand three feet away from the Standard, you're going to have a hard time visually differentiating it from a custom. You probably won't be able to tell the difference sonically at any distance. If you want Victor Wooten's bass, you'll have to pay the freight. If you want a bass that performs at the same level at half the price, the Standard does that.
