Fodera Yin-Yang Standard Wait Support Group

Another 3 gigs this weekend. Double-header on Friday with 3 hour set with my ensemble splitting time between the YYS and Rob Allen, then haul arse to a Steely Jam gig. Normally I play my AmDlxP for on the Steely Dan tunes but decided to forget traditional and do the YYS. Was supposed to be 4 gigs but somehow Saturday night's venue got double booked and the band that showed at 7pm trumped our 8pm downbeat. Last night was a our monthly residency at a local club. New amp for that show (TH500) so the recordings reflect me not being quite as dialed in for tone/balance as I like but it is what it is. We also didn't have our regular sax player instead having gtr/sax double.

At any rate, the YYS in the wild...and doing some straight-ahead. Crazy talk...

Ok, so I usually like to get out of the honeymoon phase until I wax philosophic on a new instrument. Gawd knows I've gone through enough of them over the past year or two. My reference point for "bonding" with a bass is my Rob Allen Deep 5. That instrument just speaks to me and I love it more every time I play it. I've had it for almost a year and a half and it still inspires me. I've been searching for a fretted bass (ideally a 4 and a 5) that speaks to me the say way as the RA. And the search has been extensive and expensive. But life is short and the hunt is part of the fun.

So the long story short would be various configurations of basses from Sadowsky, Roscoe, Lull, Elrick, Fender, Zon, Rob Allen, Nordstrand. I may have missed some  All great basses, but in the end I kept my pair of Rob Allens and churned through the rest. After so many years of playing and some accumulated injuries I'm picky about playability, tone, and ergos. And sadly ergos you can't really figure out until you have it in your hands for some amount of time.

Enter the YYS. I actually had found a solid fretted bass - a Fender AmDlxP that is comfy (if a tad heavy at 8.8 lbs), plays well, sounds good. But I'd been GASsing for a YY for awhile. I thought I'd talked my self out of it but when a local shop got one I decided I should go play it, hoping I wouldn't dig it. Mistake. Anywho a few pages back someone asked about a review so here are some thoughts a few weeks in after many hours and 5 gigs into the relationship.

Love the finish on the back of the neck. Absolutely sublime. Love the finish on the body, and in fact it has made it so that I don't really like the feel of the poly on my Fender (I've never been a poly fan though). At 8.3 lbs I'm happy with the weight and the balance is superb. My only ergo criticism is that I wish it had regular style Dunlop strap buttons so I could use any strap and it would also effectively extend the upper horn a bit. I find the reach to the nut while stand a bit of a stretch due to my hand issue. Seated it is perfect. As in perfect.

I was worried about playability as I tend to favor smaller frets and a bit wider nut on a 4-string. I also have played 45-105 strings so the VW set is way lighter. I figured I'd end up swapping strings. Well, I tried a set of 40-100 and didn't dig them. In fact I bought a new set of the VWs and put those on last night. For this bass and what I want to do with it I find the light strings ideal. And I'm back to gushing about the feel of the back of the neck. Makes my poor Fender feel pokey. I haven't had an issue with the larger frets. Access to the upper frets is great (and one reason I wanted this bass in the first place).

Sonically I wanted something fairly aggressive and the EMG/Pope combination covers that. I love the bridge pup with a bit of bass and mid rolled in. I also love having a "passive" style tone control that works while in active mode. I never boost treble, but there are some times I like to mellow things a bit, especially running the P pup and trying to get a bit rounder sound. One interesting note - this bass sounds great with dead strings. I've worked the original set to where they are definitely worn but the bass still sounded good. That is in contrast to other instruments where a dead set of nickels made it sound terrible. I think the electronics help with that, or maybe the Fodera strings (I usually use Dunlop or DR nickels).

The eq is interesting. Bass boost is there in spades - a little goes a long way. The mid is very nice for adding a bit of punch and bite. I generally don't touch the treble - if I want to mellow things I use the passive tone. That control also changes the feel of the notes as well.

Downsides? Sure, I can always find something to complain about. Just the strap button/upper horn thing. Other than that I don't have much to complain about. I did a quick truss rod tweak when the weather changed and have kept the action as low as possible which I've come to really appreciate.

In short, for those waiting, it is well worth the wait. For those on the fence...well, if you stay on the fence you're missing something special if you want what this bass brings to the table.

I got #57 im stoked.. my parents got it for me for a college graduation gift...

wow - beats a handshake and job well done eh? I sure hope you are in music school at least.....

ok, first gig report. A very long week at the day job, then 7pm load in, 7:30pm soundcheck (ha!), 8pm downbeat. Soundguy shows up at 5 minutes to 8pm. Right on time! **snips**

well you would never describe that mix as having the bass buried in the mix eh? almost like a bass player and a back up band.... :)

Yeah, not crazy about that recording. Part of it is the Streamliner (which is thick to begin with) but then the soundguy decided that to get a good sound he should crank bass and cut mids through the mains *sigh*

ok, so maybe some are getting sick of the live tracks, but last night we played a new venue that had a *great* sounding room. We were sans sax, and there was no FOH - just PA for mic. TH500 into a Berg AE210. I'm getting to know the bass a bit better so I'm more comfortable playing it on tunes where I'd normally use my RA or where I'd be looking for a "less modern" tone.

I like Tunisia in the last group - cool tone (again imho)

do I sense the YY may be edging out the Deluxe P?

The AmDlxP hasn't made it out of the home studio since I got the YYS. While that is somewhat normal when a new bass comes the house, the Fender probably won't seen much if any gig time. I can cop fairly close tones with the YYS and the Fodera is lighter and more sublime to play. So it really just comes down to looks and if I absolutely have to have a "traditional" vibe on stage for a particular gig.

We play Tunisia a little different each time. Actually a lot of the tunes are that way. Just depends on our mood...

Yin Yang Standard #28 has landed. The wait is over!

I can't hope to give a review better than what's been written here already. For one thing, I've only had about a half hour with it. For another, you all are much more experienced players than me.

The neck is wonderfully smooth backed, just the right shape, very comfortable coming from my Jazz. The frets are flawless, and the tone is dead even all the way up the neck. Setup and intonation are perfect to my ear, didn't get the tuner out.

I'm coming from my SX Jazz. Ok, haters gonna hate, but it's a straight up 70's style Jazz bass with lots of growl. I have that bass strung with medium DR Nickel Lo-Riders, which aside from being nickel are about as different from the Fodera VW strings as you can get. I'm used to a much firmer string, frankly because it sets up better on the SX due to its budget fretwork.

The YYS setup is very low and the strings are light and easy to play, needing the slightest touch. The preamp gives it a nice even sound. I haven't tried it passive yet. I'm playing through a Carvin BX500 and my BFM Jack 10, a combination which is very neutral with a slight tube sound. Not as throaty as the Jazz but deep, punchy, very very lovely sound.

I can't wait to get to know it more. I'm very happy to have my dream bass!

Cool, enjoy it. Give the lighter strings a chance. I have 45-105 on my other fretted 4 and initially found the YYS to be too light but now I'm addicted to them. In fact I put a set of 40-100 on the YYS but ended up buying a new set of VW strings to go back on it.

Well after months of lurking on this site and thread I finally decided to make an account.

Ian, I am assuming you are from Ontario because that is where Ultimate Basses is located. I was wondering how much the bass ended up costing you in total (mainly because of how poorly the Canadian dollar has been recently)? Also, enjoy your bass, I'm still trying to keep my mind in one piece until January.:hyper:

Also, I would like to note Fodera has some of the, no the best customer service I have ever had to deal with; polite, professional, quick to respond (to my sometimes annoying questions I presume;)), and I cannot think of one flaw.

@KevinThomas, I'm actually in MD, USA. I initially contacted Jason and he connected me with several dealers who were slotted to receive YYS basses in the first batch. I worked with Dave at Ultimate Basses just because he was very responsive and had exactly what I was looking for -- a model 10 < x < 30.

I purchased the bass from Ultimate, at the standard price (US$4750). Fodera shipped the bass directly to me when it was completed.
