Fodera Yin-Yang Standard Wait Support Group

Guys, if you keep this up you are going to be in as much trouble as I was BEFORE I was a partner here and my wife realized that somehow I had managed to buy 12 Fodera Monarchs without her realizing it. The look on her face when she counted the cases for the first time was priceless, but the conversation following the look is a tad less enjoyable to remember...

Thank goodness she is understanding AND forgiving!

Well, you met my g/f so now I can slide the blame to you and she knows who to talk to :D

My wife loves me deeply. And yet each projected bass addition (no matter how cheap) brings a discussion-she is a singer, and her argument is that all she carries is 1 voice and that works for her, if only because it has to. So why do I need more than 2 basses? hmm. I have to admit I still haven't come up with a conclusive musically sound answer here other than that like most boys, I like gear and tinkering with/torturing myself over it.

In all candor, at least in my case, the musical need stopped somewhere between 3 and 5...

Rationally speaking (at least for me):

4-string fretless
4-string fretted
5-string fretless
5-string fretted

So that's at least 4. I find that 4 and 5 string are different beasts that require different approaches. Same with fretless. If you fold in something with a particular voice like a Rob Allen then you have to increase the number. Plus you really should have backups. I think I'll end up with five. Maybe. Well, maybe not. Wait, what was the question?

The fact your wife has only one voice limits her. All singers are limited, not necessarily because of technique and personality of delivery, but because of timbre. What works for one style won't necessarily work for another. You have the luxury of not being limited in that way; all you need (assuming you have the other elements required in check) is a selection of appropriate basses. Having a wide palette of sounds at your disposal can both inspire you musically and make you more employable as a sideman.

That would be my argument anyway. :p

On a different note, how many pairs of shoes does she own? :D

nostatic,
I don't make it to LA often anymore, but I may be willing to make a special trip. It's only 4 hours from here, as you know :bassist:

Jason,
I can only imaging your wife's reaction when the numbers kept getting higher and higher as she counted up... My wife is THE best, as well. In fact, while I agonized over the Fodera, she kept telling me "just get it, just get it"...until I let the price escape my lips :rollno: Even so, after the shock wore off, she was still in my corner. I make the money, she says, and as long as we can still eat, and the kid can still go to private school...

Oh, and for ME...musical NEED would stop at 1 bass and 1 guitar...neither of which can I play worth a poop...not that that's stopped me from having 15 guitars and (soon to be) 3 basses!

Wish public school was an option here in Vegas...no go, unfortunately. It would be no problem if we still lived back where we came from (north suburban Chicago)...but then, we'd have to deal with that weather again :D I'd love to move to LA, if I only had some really rich relatives that I don't know that I have, leave me their trust funds... ;) That would solve the limited number of Foderas problem, too!!!!!

the latest stuff and nonsense. Fun with a looper live (still getting comfortable with using it under fire). YYS in triplicate, Aggie TH500 into Berg AE210, no FOH for anything :D

And if you've got 12 minutes to burn, all of the soloists blowing away (YYS providing the bass). First time for this trumpet player on the stand with us.
