Fonkiest Filter

Because of this thread, I took my C4 last night to a gig and loaded the Tron setting from the Spectrum to use. Just a simple envelope filter sound, no octaves or fuzz or synth.
I have to say that I got the filter sound of my dreams! It sounded perfect to my ears. It cut through the mix easely without being too peaky. Responded perfectly to my playing dynamics.
Man, I must have been smiling all the time it was on.

The Chunk Systems 00Funk filter paired with the Chunk Systems Brown Dog gated fuzz is the thickest and juiciest combo I've found.

They say the Chunk Systems Brown Dog and the Agent 00Funk are designed to compliment each other, but I already have two other envelope filters (Source Audio Soundblox Bass Envelope Filter and Pigtronix EP-1). Can you still get comparably awesome funky synth sounds using a Brown Dog with another envelope filter? Or is it worth it to buy the Agent 00Funk specifically?

In my opinion it's the pairing of both Chunk 00Funk and Brown Dog that provides that special sauce. There's an envelope connection between the two that makes them just pair fantastically together. I own a lot of other envelope filters and although many of them sound great with the Brown Dog, the combination of those two can't be matched (the 00Funk is a particularly wet and synthy sounding filter). Good luck finding one though. The Octavius Squeezer is even better, super fat sounding, totally analogue but fully programmable (not a plug n play pedal though).

Exactly what @Bo0tsy said. I think I remember reading somewhere that the envelope connection feeds a phase inverted version of the signal from the BD to the 00Funk, which brings the thick squelch. You can use either pedal without, and I've seen clone versions without the connection, but that's where the magic is.

I had an original BD, but there was a small amount of bleed from the fuzz circuit into the clean signal when the pedal was bypassed. Not sure if this is a common issue or just particular to that pedal. I had a smaller enclosure clone built from the original and it sounds identical but dead quiet when bypassed. I paired it with a JohnK 00Funk clone (small enclosure) and the combo is perfect. Just sayin... the Chunk System pedals are hard to find, but it is possible to find high quality clones that nail the character of the originals.

The Octavius Squeezer sounds amazing from demos but I haven't made the leap because I read it has a challenging interface. Having many control options is overwhelming for me. I do see it includes 50 presets; that sounds easy at least. How hard did you find it to navigate and dial in the pedal? Any experience with the firmware for it?

Yep I won't kid you the Octavius Squeezer does have a very challenging interface. There is a "show all parameters" function which if switched off lets you focus on just those parameters which might be most relevant to a particular preset, which is best for tweaking or fine tuning a preset. Importing patches via an SD card can be very tricky as there's no load or save errors. There's another thread here on Talkbass where all the v11 preset settings got put into a spreadsheet which is very handy especially if you accidentally delete patches!

@gastric has an excellent wealth of information and patches on the Squeezer too.

Creating new patches from scratch is very difficult, but that said the presets or subtle variations on them are pretty amazing. It's a flawed pedal from an interface perspective, but its flaws are very forgiving when it sounds as good as it does. To put things in perspective, I have a Future Impact which can do all kinds of other stuff, and tracks better but I think I prefer the sounds I can get out of the Squeezer, and the FI doesn't have anywhere near as strong an envelope filter or gated fuzz in its arsenal.

I admit I’m still using the Broughton Joshwah and don’t really feel compelled to change it. I recently added a Brown Dog clone and have been working on dialing it in for fat, synthy tones.

My favorite filter is Aguilar Filter Twin; but I don't use envelope filters any more. I prefer phasers for modulation. Aguilar Grape Phaser works fine for me.
Do you have an increase volume when you engage the pedal of the Aguilar grape phaser ?
I like phaser bass pedal.
I have the pigtonix envelope phaser, great pedale, but wheny you engage it, the volume was increase to much !
Did the same with the Aguilar grape phaser ?
Thank's

Good breakdown. Completely agree. Of the two, the Chunk has a better filter, but it is still a little weak for my taste. Killer synths with usable filters. But neither has my dream filter type sound.

Which pedal has your dream filter sound? The Chunk filter sounds are right up there with my Mu-Tron's, Moogerfooger and Funk-a-Duck as my favourite filters, at least for me anyway.
