I happen to be a Lakland endorser but I posted the vid because the tone of the bass sounds so nice.
Surprisingly, I don't like anything about the tone. Seems like it's sitting on top of the mix rather than in it.

It is on top of the mix. And the playing is very modern R&B/Soul.

Regarding the mix, sure that's just WHAT IT IS! If you've ever listened to a live r&b/soul album, the bass is always on top.
In fact, the bass has always been #1 in R&B. Ever listen to Motown?

Is this the direction R&B/Soul players are going these days? I think it almost defeats the vibe, but maybe it's cause i'm an old man at heart lol. I much prefer a minimalist and deeper mixed vibe like this other Goapele tune.

The clip that you provided happens to be my favorite song by Goapele.
On the album that the track Closer is off of none of the bass is up front in the mix.
Yea...and the bass doesn't sound anything like that. It doesn't bite and sit in the guitar's sonic space at all. The guitar sounds like it was EQ'd out of the way of the bass, and sounds thin because of it. The keys are actually holding the rhythm down more than the bass is. But hey, to each their own. Can't deny the bass sounds great in its own right

I'm not Fretless5verfan but I'd say no, especially for the genre. And I absolutely love the mix and especially the bass tone. Phenomenal IMO.
The thing about the first clip (which does sound like the bass has an envelope/low pass filter on it which I think is turned off on the bridges) is that it is live and not necessarily an album mix. I don't think it's the tone that makes the bass sit on top of the mix so much as it is the volume. They have the bass very loud IMO. Which works pretty well for those low filtered notes but makes any higher notes REALLY pop out.
Personally I think that tone is fat and funky.
Jared it's a combination of the bassist volume and the mix. Those two basic elements are what makes the bass sound so funky.
Not really that 'up in the mix' to me, just very percussive, not a lot of sustained notes. It sure has that 'Bartolini burp' tone to my ear. Not my thing, but the band sounds great. I liked the clip.
I too think the bass would sound better with a bit less palm muting or whatever he was doing, but that's just personal taste.

That Lakland is killin' and damn, Goapele is FINE!! And to those who don't have a lot of experience in R&B, Soul and Funk music, the bass has ALWAYS been in the forefront and a driving force of the genre. The guitar takes more of a back seat and becomes more of a rhythm instrument. Pretty much the complete opposite of Rock music where the Guitar takes a front seat and the bass takes a back seat. It is what it is. I will say, take the time and open your mind to other styles and genres of music. You'd be surprised at what will rub off on you!
I love palm muting (I use it quite a lot). I am not a fan of "dragging" which is how he was playing but hey, it's a modern thing and it's a part of the current state of the genre (Neo-Soul).
+1 That band is killin'. Not familiar with the term 'dragging' as you are using it, but if that's what he is doing, I don't dig it much! Again, pure personal taste there... the guy can obviously play!
The tone is not for everyone. That was also an eq'd board feed. Probably sounded different on stage. I listened to some of your clips and I gotta say, you were quite present in the mix, especially on Scanners. So is it just a 'tone' thing? 'Dragging' may not be the right term but it's what I call it. When they play way behind the beat and it seems like they are 'dragging'! Imagine 2 recorded tracks not quite in sync with each other!

Ah.. behind the beat playing... I have no problem with that! The key to playing behind the beat is to not drag. That is an art that I don't have. I'm so on top of the beat that the whiteness oozes from every note
