I wouldn't say that! I concentrate very hard on playing right on top of the beat unless the song calls for something else. I'm a huge fan of being 'locked in'! No matter the genre or style!I'm so on top of the beat that the whiteness oozes from every note
I hear a major J Dilla influence on this. Very Dilla in terms of the feel of the time.

Yea man, that's what I was saying from jump lol. It just sounds like his bass it sitting on top of everything. I'm not saying it sounded like that on the stage, or that he's a crappy player or anything like that. I just don't like how the bass is sitting on top of the mix to my ears. It could be just his playing style, just his tone, just the EQ, just the mix, etc. I'm not attacking anyone
I'm forward in the mix on my own stuff because I wrote 90% of the music, and I tend to lead the songs (not by my choice). The guitarist, of his own accord, is deciding to be very atmospheric in this project, so I take up the meat of the sonic space. My bass, and playing style, and rig etc. also all lend themselves to a pretty "present" vibe (dual DC ash/ebony bass into an M9 and a PH410). Thanks for listening!
On the topic of Lakland tone... just got this clip in this morning of a very short demo I did for the GB band I'm in. I no longer have the bass (traded in part for a Mike Lull) but man, I thought this thing killed/growled. It's a 55-01 with the Bart Mk.5 upgraded pickups and Audere pre.

Nice. I have a stock 55-01 and I hate the way those pickups compress when I start slapping. I may or may not do an upgrade. I may keep it all Bart though. Just the 'better' Barts!

Pino's playing on the D'Angelo record still takes my breath away. That's some of the best playing I've ever heard.
I don't personally believe that when you play with a singer that you should be a distraction. I didn't dig the bass playing in that first clip at all...not my thing. I'm far from an expert at this style, but to me Pino on the D'Angelo record and Hubert Eaves IV on the live Erykah Badu album are the ones that have really knocked me out. That is some deeeeeep playing.
I want to like it because she's very easy on the eyes, but I can't. Maybe if I listened to it a few more times I'd warm up to it. I guess I can appreciate the bass line, but I get tired of listening to it. I think if he would lock in and do a more straight ahead groove on the chorus I'd probably like this song a lot.

I think that is Foster (another killer bassist) who owns the Art Gallery. I wish Leon would be more visible especially for us cats who appreciate what he brought to R&B music! Nice song as well. The bass tone isn't quite my thing though, neither is that style of playing really. Still a very tight and funky band.
