Someone mentioned J Dilla and he had a HUGE influence on the way Neo-soul sounds period,his use of malipulated samples from different records gave his music a slightly out of sync push-pull effect. I did a Clinic and at one point we played a groove which was in this style and a very respected older drummer from Chicago who was in attendance really had a issue with the fact that I what I was playing was "behind the beat",I actually had to stop and tell him that it was on purpose and that it was a part of that style,kind of funny actually

Not putting it on youtube will not save it from criticism ma man :p Do what you love and you won't care. Just like I'm sure the bassist from the first clip couldn't care less what anyone thinks of his tone but him and the person who cuts his checks lol.

The truth is that 80-95% of Youtube criticism is coming from guys with no gigs or just some low level gigs. Real working bassists are probably out getting paid and not listening to a bunch of Youtube clips.

Calvin And Jamaaladeen are my buddies. Super talented and no props in the US.

The most interesting thing I've noticed is how kats are so quick to say how they would have approached the bass line so different, which would automatically make the song so much better. And they espress how the bass line in question is just not the bass line for the song.


I just listen to other bass players and respect what they do. Simply because I am not them. And I'm diggin where their coming from.

When kats tell me that I should have played a bass line a certain way. I tell them to go and F themselves. And the majority of those great critic/players rarely gig.

Dude, that second track on your CD, you should have approached it differently.
You could have maybe pushed a little more.
